I've just spent several posts talking about mending and using what you have. But sometimes you just really need new clothes. I keep a running list of items I'd like to add to my closet. I've been wanting to add more blouses and pullover sweaters to my closet for a while. I also had one of my go to tees wear out recently. My first priority is to try looking secondhand for a while. If I have trouble finding what I'd like I look at companies that make their clothing ethically. I don't usually buy so much at once, so here's what I bought so far in 2019.
.
-Light white sweater (@goodwillintl -thrift store): I love the different textures in this top, and how different it looks based on if you're wearing something darker or lighter underneath.
-Lilac gingham button down (Goodwill): This fit all my surprisingly difficult to find requirements: natural fibers, collar, buttons all the way to neck, full length sleeves, opaque
-Grey crew neck tee ( @everlane ): This replaces an older vneck tee, and I'm excited to try a new silhouette
-Grey cashmere sweater (Everlane): This was the most expensive and also my favorite! It's so soft and so versatile too. I bought another sweater from them last year and I love both. .
.
Have you bought anything in 2019? If not, what's on your wish list?

I used to hate how these sweatpants dragged on the ground every time I wear them. Especially because I wear them to bed and feel like I'm just dragging dirt from the hem onto clean sheets. So I finally (pretty sure I got these in high school!) decided to hem them a good 5 inches. In the past I wouldn't have considered it because I thought them hem wouldn't look nice, or wouldn't be sturdy. Which is why I was so excited to see detailed instructions for hemming in Make + Mend by Jessica Marquez ( @miniaturerhino ) . This type of stitching is really easy to do by hand and only needs a certain type of needle and thread. Honestly the hardest part was evenly cutting the fabric so the hem would be straight. These pants are so much cuter now, and I'm hoping they'll last much longer.
.
.
On the other hand, 3 of my pieces of loungewear wore out completely this year: 2 PJ pants I had for 10 years, and 1 pair of leggings. Anyone have recommendations for ethically made, traditional pajama pants?

Looking for climate solutions in wake of the IPCC report saying we only have 12 years before we hit a climate increase of 1.5 C? .
.
I've been thinking about this a lot. It's really exciting to be a part of the zero waste/low impact movement which I see growing every day. But ever since the climate report came out, I've been looking for more carbon oriented solutions. I read two books about this at the end of last year. One, which talked about personal carbon footprints (which I'll cover in a few days), and this one which focuses on the big picture.
.
Drawdown: The most comprehensive plan ever proposed to reverse global warming was edited by Paul Hawken in an attempt to pull together and quantify different climate change solutions. "Draw down" refers to the idea of re-sequestering carbon. It's a science based book that is written for a general audience. The authors rank 80 climate change solutions based on the gigatons of carbon dioxide reduced, also noting net cost and net savings. They focus globally on both first and third world countries.
.
Here are my favorites from the top 10:
1. Refigeration management: this surprised me too!
2. Wind Turbines
3. Food waste (reducing it)
4. Plant rich diet: this chapter was nuanced, comparing vegetarianism and veganism, as well as the idea of just treating meat as a delicacy. They talked about cultural reasons for meat, and ways in which meat can be more sustainable if we do eat it.
6. Educating girls: there was actually a whole section in this book about empowering women and girls!
7. Family planning (giving women the agency and choice to make their own decisions)
.
There were a few zero waste ideas that made the list too: home (55) and industrial recycling (56), composting (60), and recycled paper (70).

Finally bought these dried guajillo chiles from @oaktownspice . It's an amazing smelling spice shop with huge jars all along the walls. They have packaged spices but also let you bring your own container and they were so so nice about helping me tare and fill my jar. I've posted about them before, so if you live in the Bay Area and haven't been, I highly recommend it.
.
I've been craving pozole for ages! Pozole is a Mexican pork and hominy soup flavored with chiles. I wanted to do a vegetarian version so I used recipes from @zerowastechica and @cookieandkate . I subbed pinto beans for the pork to get some protein, but read that jackfruit is a great sub texture wise. The chiles provide so much flavor that you don't need meat. I ate this with a bunch of veggie toppings (from the farmer's market and Berkeley Bowl) and tortillas.

What are you cooking this week?

Since I was in the area, I made a trip to @rainbow_grocery to stock up on a few things I have a hard time finding other places. I bought:
-baking soda
-black/beluga lentils (my favorite because they cook really fast and hold their shape)
-caffeine free tea for the evenings
-olive oil (I didn't buy the bottle, it's reused from a local bottle I had bought. I have two so I have a backup, since I don't get to go very often.)
-powdered laundry soap (I used to use liquid, but this is much easier to refill. Also, it's super cheap!)
.
.
I'm so lucky to live in the Bay Area where I can buy hard to find liquids and pastas in bulk, even though I don't live close enough to every week. While I was there buying detergent, I was thinking about loop, the new sustainable initiative from Unilever that is piloting zero waste refillable packaging for common household brands. It's really exciting to me, because while I'm willing and able to make the hour+ trek to buy laundry soap in bulk, not everyone has the time (or even the access) to do so. I know it's not perfect, but I'm hoping it will bridge the gap for a lot of people, especially since some people aren't comfortable switching brands.
.
What do you think? Would you use zero waste services from a mainstream brand if you could?

An hour before I was supposed to fly back home to the Bay Area I bent over and ripped the only pair of long pants I had packed in the upper thigh/crotch area! (Swipe to see) I had only bought these jeans a year ago and also I hate wearing skirts on the plane so I was pretty bummed. So my mom did an emergency fix with her sewing machine which held me over until I got home, when it started to come undone again (3rd pic).
.
I set them aside for a few weeks during the holiday season as I wasn't sure what to do with them. That is until I stumbled across Katrina Rodabaugh's book Mending Matters ( @katrinarodabaugh ). Her book beautifully shows how to repair many types of common denim issues. It's totally accessible for beginners without machines like me. It heavily draws on Japanese mending techniques, so I ordered the special sashiko needles and thread. While I was waiting I also read Make + Mend by Jessica Marquez ( @miniaturerhino ) which has a wider variety of projects and stitches, though I mostly used the advice from the first book. Even if you're not planning on mending, these books are a joy to read!
.
I made a patch from an even older and more worn pair of jeans, trimmed the frayed hole, and stitched it in place. Using a larger patch and stitching over it helps reinforce the material, as you can see it was wearing out in other areas near the hole (4th pic). A few days later I decided to reinforce the other side too (last pic) since I could tell it was pretty worn too.
.
Because of the location, the mend isn't visible at all in dim lighting/at night. If you're looking hard or have bright lighting, yes, you can see it. Not sure if I'll wear them to lab, but they're definitely good for around the house and errands. And they feel stronger now too! These pics aren't glamorous, so check out the #visiblemending tag for some beautiful mends.
.
Have you mended anything recently?

Another post about shopping secondhand! It's been a little over a year since I switched to cloth napkins, and this is the first time I have found napkins in a thrift store. They were so so cheap!Buying secondhand is definitely the most sustainable way to shop. Not only are you taking things out of the waste stream, but you're saving the resources that it would've taken to make a new product.
.
But how can you do cloth napkins more sustainably, if like me, you can't always find them secondhand?
.
1. Buy natural fibers like cotton or linen. Not only do they work much better, but you don't have to worry about microfiber shedding when washing. If you can afford it, try to buy linen over cotton since it takes much less water to produce. Full disclosure: the most I've been able to afford are napkins that are a cotton linen blend.
2. Ask for them as gifts! If you have loved ones who want to get you presents, you might as well leverage that and ask for something sustainable. I'm lucky enough to have gotten my first 4 napkins that way.
3. Make your own out of old fabric! I wasn't able to do this because I've never had the appropriate fabric, but if you do, great!
4. Wash with care! Did you know you can use a cloth napkin for more than one meal? That's actually why napkin rings were invented: to keep napkins sorted by person between meals. The less washing you can do the better, to save water and energy! And from a carbon perspective, it's more sustainable to line dry your napkins to save energy if possible.
.
I think a lot of these lessons can apply to many zero waste things. What do you find easy to get secondhand, and what do you have more trouble with?

I haven't posted a lot about clothing lately, mostly because I haven't bought any in a while. I bought this purse just before the holidays to replace my go-to purse. It was a secondhand faux-leather purse I had for over a year, and the coating of the bag was flaking off for months. I knew I wanted to replace it with something higher quality, and probably real leather. But I know the process of making leather goods is terrible for the environment. So I spent a while looking for one secondhand.
.
I bought this from @therealreal and I'm really happy with my purchase. They're a higher end online consignment store, so their stuff is pricey but good. Their search features are excellent so I was able to narrow by bag type and color and then look for a simple bag that fit the dimensions I wanted. It's from a well known, non ethical designer so I turned it around for this photo.
.
If you don't have good secondhand stores in your area, I highly recommend shopping online. I've also purchased from Thread Up, which has a wider range of brands at more affordable price points. These sites are really good if you know what brands you like, or want to buy something you don't need to try on, like a purse.
.
What's your favorite secondhand find? .

Got my first @imperfectproduce box in a while! I like this company because they sell produce rejected from grocery stores for cosmetic reasons. Reducing food waste is one of the best things we can do to halt the worsening of global warming.
.
Unfortunately I actually forgot to customize the box, so I had to come up with a plan of how to actually use all this before it goes bad. Here's what I've made or am planning to make:
🍲Sweet Potato and Peanut Stew (sweet potato, kale, and onion)
🍝Zucchini, potato and white bean pasta (potatoes and one zucchini)
🥒Zucchini butter (zucchini)
🥕Carrot sticks for hummus (carrots)
🥂Grapefruit mimosas since I hate raw grapefruit (grapefruit hiding under other fruit)
.
.
What's on your menu this week?

This week's farmer's market was much sparser than usual. Much fewer stalls (which actually made it easier to walk around) and fewer customers since it was raining. Eating seasonal is really fun in the summer but more challenging in the winter. So lucky to live in California though, since I know a lot of places close up over the winter!
.
One thing I'm really trying to incorporate into my cooking is to use recipes where it's easy to make swaps based on the season or what you're in the mood for. So I'm really happy I got Mark Bittman's book on vegetarian food for Christmas. I bought minestrone ingredients and his recipe had so many suggestions based on the season!
.
.
Do you have any easy to adapt recipes you recommend?

Do you have any easy to adapt recipes you recommend?

Not into holiday decor? There are plenty of ways to get in the mood!
Taste: Cooking holiday favorites is a great way to get in the mood. One of our traditions is to have shelled nuts in December.
Touch: Get cozy in some soft warm blankets.
Smell: I love the smell of spices like cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. I use them in cookies and mulled wine. I know some people are really into scented candles too!
Hear: Love listening to Christmas music and I have a bunch of playlists on my phone. I also listen to our old Christmas records whenever I visit my parents.
See: I love watching Christmas movies to get in the mood too!
.
Plus there are all sorts of experiences like holiday parties, parades, and looking at Christmas lights on houses. Not to mention just spending time with friends and family!

Thought I'd show you all my holiday decorations! Here are my tips:
❄️DIYs: I try to keep it simple here. I have paper snowflakes and origami trees I reuse year after year.
🌹Natural, compostable decor: I love having fresh flowers (these were a gift) and pine branches. It's great that they can be composted at the end of the season. I also dried some orange slices for decor around the house. Last year I made a cranberry garland for the tree.
🎄Use what you have: Our tree is a prime example of this. I prefer "real" trees but since we already had this fake one and we're traveling it didn't make sense to buy one this year. It's also decked out in our childhood ornaments. I also save christmas cards from past years to use as decor. My candles are all neutral, so they work well year round.
🕯️Try Secondhand: my candleholders are from a thrift store and I always see so much Christmas decor in thrift stores too!
