I bought just the basics at the farmers market this weekend. Keeping it simple this week and cooking with things in my pantry and freezer to reduce food waste. I'm making mujaddara, a lentil and rice dish, as well as a simple pasta dish using leftover pasta sauce I froze. I'll be eating both with a side of sauteed chard (and chard stems). I'll go back to all the delicious springy produce next week! I spotted artichokes, asparagus, strawberries, sweet pea blossoms, and fava beans! Anyone have a recipe for favas? I haven't ever made them!

I visited the best place ever this weekend: the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse in Oakland! It's this amazing shop in Oakland that collects, sorts, and sells all sorts of fun stuff. They have tons of things that artists and teachers can use. I saw decor, fabric scraps and sewing, art supplies, stationary, cloth napkins, plastic odds and ends, and so much more!
.
I found some great fabric scraps to use for #sashiko mending. A couple of my cloth bags have been getting holes, and I want to make them last, and also personalize them. I definitely want to stop by around the holidays to buy things to DIY ornaments.
.
Check out their ig: @creativereuse ! Do you have something similar in your town? I've heard there's a similar place in San Francisco called @scrapsf

Made it out to the farmer's market this weekend after being out of town last weekend! This week the market was sunny and bustling and I saw the beginnings of spring produce. I spotted artichokes for the first time but I never know what to do with them. I'm snapped up some sugar snap peas to make @bonappetitmag 's spring risotto recipe. I'm also making a lentil, asparagus, and potato salad.
.
I was shocked at how expensive asparagus was ($8)! So I did a little more reading about it, and one of the articles I read even interviewed someone from the farm I purchased from ( @capay_organic , who I love buying from ). It turns out that artichoke harvesting is extremely labor intensive and something like 20 pairs of hands touch a spear of asparagus before you buy it! And labor in California is not cheap. Plus, it takes a couple of years before a plant can even yield spears. To make things worse, competition from year round cheap asparagus from Mexico makes it even harder to profit. Now I know why asparagus is a treat! Still, it's nice to support a local farm since apparently a lot of their income comes from farmer's markets.
.
Have you thought about researching how much work goes into your favorite fruit or vegetable? Would love to learn more!

So excited that we're finally having some warmer days. Here's my tip for making a cool zero waste drink!
.
I used to think making iced tea was so intimidating! I have no idea why, since I make hot tea all the time! My favorite method is to cold brew. Just get a large container, add in your tea strainer with loose leaf tea, pour cold water over, and refrigerate for several hours. Easy! My favorite iced tea to make is lychee black, which I buy from @rainbow_grocery .
.
And I don't drink sweet tea, but if I did, I'd use simple syrup, since sugar won't dissolve in cold liquids. It's another ridiculously simple thing to prep. Just heat up equal parts of sugar and water until the sugar is dissolved. It keeps in the fridge and is also super versatile; I use mine for making cocktails. You can also have fun experimenting with other sweeteners.
.
What's your favorite hot weather beverage?

A couple days ago I posted about the 10 items that have been most helpful for reducing my waste. Everyone is different, but these are the things I didn't feel the need to buy:

1) Reusable straw: I don't have a medical need for straws (but some people do, so please be understanding!) so I rarely use them. I don't drink boba or smoothies. I usually try to ask for no straw, or if I'm getting something like a cocktail, try to order one that probably wouldn't have one.
2) Beeswax wraps: These are a a substitute for foil/plastic wrap etc... They are usually cotton coated with beeswax and can be wiped clean (just don't use with raw meat). I use lots of other things instead. I have several small jars, and some old mini Tupperware I use instead. If I have a big bowl I need to cover, I just put a plate on top!
3) Reusable silicone bags: These are used as a substitute for plastic, single use Ziploc bags. I just use a small container instead! I can see how these would be useful if you do things where weight is an issue. But generally I think silicone has the same disposal issues as plastic, and in my experience it starts to take on the smells of what's in it, just like plastic.
4) Bamboo toothbrush and zero waste toothpaste: I have had the same electric toothbrush for years and years. Only the heads need to be replaced, which makes it not too different from bamboo brushes which don't usually have compostable bristles. Plus every single dentist I've had ever has recommended the brush I have and it really does work really well. No need to throw out something I already have. I've also never found zero waste toothpaste with fluoride.
.
In general my philosophy is to make do with what you have, and if not, buy secondhand. If that's not possible or practical, then I'll buy something new.
.
What swaps have you found unnecessary? And what swaps do you absolutely love?
.

I'm all about the low waste lifestyle, but lately I've been trying to work on my carbon footprint. One thing that's been easy for me to do is switch to air drying my clothes instead of in the dryer, since the carbon footprint of drying clothes is pretty big. I do wash towels and sheets in a separate load and dry those in a dryer since I don't have enough space to air dry large items in my apartment. I realize I'm lucky to be able to do this since in my new place we have a washer in the basement and I don't have a ton of clothes to wash. If I had a large household or had to use the laundromat (which I used to) it probably wouldn't be practical.
.
Do you think you could work air drying clothes into your routine?

Hello spring! I bought these irises package free at the farmers market yesterday! We actually get flowers year round in California, but most of them come in plastic packaging. So I always snap up unpackaged ones when I can. In a few weeks I think the stand that does 100% package free will be back.

What's your favorite part about spring?

Trying to figure out how to most effectively cut your waste without spending lots of money? Here are the 10 things that I have found are the most useful and/or affordable ways to cut waste. Keep in mind I've been doing this for over a year and didn't get everything at once so I also have suggestions on how to get some of these things without spending any money/using new resources. I'll make a post soon about things I think you *don't* need to buy.
.
1) bar of soap: This is one of the cheapest and most accessible swaps ever. I use bar soap for hand washing and in the shower to avoid liquid soap and body wash. Of course use up what you already have first!
2) tea strainer: I drink multiple cups a day so having a strainer for loose leaf tea reduced so much single use packaging waste. I already had one, and have since bought two more to make my life easier. I've heard french presses are also great for this if you want something multi-use.
3) water bottle: I already had several so I didn't need to buy one. If you can't afford one, see if you can save an empty glass drink bottle, or re-use a jar.
4) to-go coffee mug: I splurged on this KeepCup since having something aesthetically pleasing makes me more likely to use it (plus I've used it for alcohol or water at happy hours and it fits right in). You may already have one, but if not, consider ordering coffee "for here" or bringing a normal mug
5) jars: About 80% of my jars are secondhand and were sources from yard sales, friends, or saved from food I bought. These are so versatile and I've found all sorts of great purposes for them like bringing to restaurant for leftovers. I only bought a few in hard to find sizes and when I was starting out and wanted a few right away.
6) paper towel substitute/rags: I used to use so so many paper towels! I bought these to use in the kitchen and I love how they dry really quickly. I find that people (roommates etc...) are more likely to use them because they're a bit more aesthetically pleasing and for a single purpose. If you're lucky to have excess clothing, you can also totally make rags out of old tees, or use normal wash cloths/dish rags. (CONTINUED IN COMMENTS)

Grocery shopping in three vignettes. I finally went to the farmers market for the first time in ages (first pic). The most exciting thing I found out was that we can now get California strawberries! I just had to snap some up. I transferred them to my own container and gave them back the plastic to reuse. I also went to Whole Foods (the closest low waste friendly store near me) and bought the produce I didn't get at the farmers market (2nd pic) and some baking ingredients I had just run out of (3rd pic). The sugar and butter packaging is compostable and/or recyclable. I feel like I always post pics of the healthy stuff I buy so I wanted to keep it real here.
.
On the menu this week: Posole and Spicy Cabbage Salad. What are you making?

I've been so busy that the last week (Day 6-10) of the #10x10challenge just flew by! So here are my last five outfits. Every time I do this challenge it gets easier. Before I was self conscious about wearing the same shirt twice in one week (even though I was washing in between) and now I really don't care! It's been great to wear my favorite clothes over and over unapologetically. And I've found a few new outfit combos I love! I know the #konmarimethod is controversial but it really reminds me of what Marie Kondo says about surrounding yourself with things that spark joy. It's better to have fewer things that spark joy and pass by purchases that don't. (Although sometimes you just need something in a pinch and have to compromise).

Ever wonder what to do with leek greens? The green parts are too tough to eat. I was making something with leeks this weekend and there were more green parts on the leek than white so I knew I had to find a use. I thought about just freezing them for stock later but I don't have enough space in my freezer. So I decided to make stock on the spot. I washed them thoroughly and added a few frozen vegetable scraps and water and let it simmer for an hour. I could have frozen it after that but I just put the whole pot in the fridge and then used it to make risotto the next day. Flavorful broth is one of the key ingredients for a great risotto and this was so good! I also added miso and mushroom stems to the broth while reheating to add some extra umami flavor. I highly recommend making leek broth.

Day 3-5 of the #10x10challenge . It took until the 5th day to have worn everything once. I'm glad to be taking a break this weekend. It makes it so much easier to keep up with laundry and it's a nice breather. Looking forward to next week!
