  • Coopers making barrels, as depicted in an early 16th century calendar for the month of August (British Library Yates Thompson 30, f. 8). In the Middle Ages, barrels were used to transport everything from fish to oil to coins, since their round shape allowed them to be moved about relatively easily. However, different goods needed to be contained in different types of barrels, many of which required a craftsman with unique expertise to build. For instance, a "wet" cooper was one who specialised in making barrels that could hold liquids like wine, while a "dry" cooper, as the name suggests, made ones that were only suitable for dry commodities. A wet cooper& #039 ;s barrels were usually higher quality and used a better wood like oak, as they had to be watertight and, if filled with alcohol, able to withstand the pressure from the fermentation process. This also meant that they could be reused and last for decades, whereas a dry cooper& #039 ;s barrels were more expendable. The legacy of the cooperage industry can be seen in many common European surnames, such as the English & #039 ;Cooper& #039 ;, German & #039 ;Fassbender& #039 ; ("cask-joiner"), and Dutch & #039 ;Kuiper& #039 ;. ________ #medieval #middleages #history #historic #historical #book #oldbooks #manuscript #old #illustration #barrel #work #oak #wood #wine #culture #heritage #art #design #craft #craftsman #fish #job #art #design #miniature #calendar #industry #europe #european
