    #OTD July 11th in #Queen history
.
👑
In 1997 & 2000 – #Queen were awarded Platinum for #GreatestHits I & II #US sales.
Greatest Hits is found in countless households and is really a good introduction to the band in all their glory. It is all of their singles & songs that every Queen fan must have heard at some point. Some of these songs have been played to death on the radio & on MTV but there is no denying the power of the music & Mercury's incredible vocal register
.
It begins with bonafide classic monster 'Bohemian Rhapsody' that is an indispensable rock icon. 'Another One Bites The Dust' is certainly one of the masterpieces with amazing drum power & classy vocals. 'Killer Queen' takes us to the prog early years. 'Bicycle Race' is a wonderful song & I have a soft spot for 'You're My Best Friend' with dynamic organ & harmonies.Other highlights are definitely 'Play The Game', the fun rollicking 'Flash', prog excess in 'Seven Seas Of Rhye', quintessential 'We Will Rock You' & barnstormer 'We Are The Champions'. Really, there is no excuse, this is as good as it gets for a collection of Queen & one for the newbie & indeed the Queen addict who wants all the masterpieces packed on one CD. Queen's 'Greatest Hits' album is one of the finest compilations I know, and I would be very lost without it. Through this album, I have managed to bond with my non-progressive friends in a semi-progressive way. There's no denying that on more than a few of these songs, Queen show some very progressive tendencies, whilst keeping the music radio-friendly.Many of the songs on this compilation show the group getting the mixture of different factors just right, with the result being songs that will last for generations. Queen's 'Greatest Hits' is a perfect introduction to the legendary Queen

    ✔ Today , on July 18th, 1970 -
London, UK, Imperial College
'Early Shows' ✅Their second show was played to about fifty people, during which the band announced to the small crowd that Tim Staffell had left the band and that Freddie Mercury (who now no longer goes by the name Freddie Bulsara) is their new frontman. After a stint of reading Roman mythology around this time, he would change his last name to Mercury, meaning "messenger of the gods." However, when he made the change legally is another matter. This cue sheet from Queen's first BBC session reveals him still using his birth name in 1973. ✅Brian May later reflected on this show: "The first proper gig we did was at Imperial College in the Union Hall. I remember it very distinctly because I'd seen all sorts of people playing in there. I'd been part of the Entertainment Committee [as a student] and we booked a group every Saturday night in those days. People like Spooky Tooth and Steamhammer! We booked Jimi Hendrix too. So for us it was a dream come true to actually play on that stage. It used to get packed in there so it was a major stepping stone for us." ✅Roger Taylor added: "Imperial College was effectively our positional and spiritual base and so means a lot to Queen. Many good memories, without it... who knows?" ✅Doug Puddifoot also filmed the only known video footage of Smile (at the Royal Albert Hall in London, 1969) and later designed Queen's debut album cover using photos he took at a party in June 1971
