Minimalist shoes are often debated when it comes to running. In the end, it’s all about how you are interacting with the ground, your strength, tissue tolerance/robustness, and the dose or distances being run at any given time.
🔑 While Running is an activity that not everyone partakes in, walking applies to everyone. What you wear on your feet matters, and wearing less has much greater potential benefits:
👣 We often take walking for granted. Many of us are not mindful of HOW we walk. It starts with FEEL and proprioception.
• Minimalist shoes allow you to feel how you are interacting with the ground...every step you take. When on hard surfaces, this is very noticeable. Having less cushion often directly modifies HOW you walk, and this is based on how impact forces are perceived.
• Adjustments are made in your walking stride almost immediately, as it doesn’t feel good to walk inefficiently (ie. slamming your heel into the ground).
• Wearing a less cushioned/supportive shoe also makes your feet and body work harder to buffer impact, adapt to the ground, and produce propulsion. Working harder equates to more strength based on the SAID principle.
🔑 Walking around in minimalist shoes is more demanding, as it requires you to use your neuromusculoskeletal system more to walk efficiently. This creates positive effects: improved strength, function, and efficiency over time.
➡️ Like running, the dose can matter. Transitioning may or may not be able to happen all at once. That being said, it is a beneficial thing to do in the long term.
