The days are quite freezing by now. Winter is coming: Glenfiddich Winter Storm Batch No. 2.

Glenfiddich is one of the biggest whisky distilleries in Scotland. The market size of Glenfiddich allows malt master Brian Kinsman to try some experiments. The first of those experiments was the Glenfiddich IPA (finished in craft IPA beer casks) and the second experiment was the Glenfiddich Project XX (20 whisky experts were invited to select 20 different casks on their behalf at the Conval warehouse, 17 bourbon barrels, 2 sherry butts and 1 port pipe).
Batch No. 1 of the third experiment, the Glenfiddich Winter Storm, was released in October 2017. Brian Kinsman was inspired by the Peller Estates winery near Niagara in Canada. He was fascinated by the ice wine production. So back in Scotland he experimented with French oak ice wine casks. He found out that only older whiskies were able to stand up against the heavy impact of the ice wine casks since they are more influenced by the wood and not only by the sweetness. So the Glenfiddich Winter Storm aged for 21 years and was finished in those French oak ice wine casks.
I realized quickly that this whisky is unique. It reminded me of my Tokaji Cask whisky after the first impact on the nose. The aroma got a lot of sweetness and vanilla in it. On the palate I tasted a lot of honey and some wine and oak notes. The finish is sweetish burning. I couldn't drink the whisky too often because of the sweetness, but this one is really fascinating and a clear recommendation.

Last weekend I visited the whisky exhibition in Trebsen (Germany) and tried a real oldie but goldie: Laphroaig 28 years Limited Edition (1990/2018).
    ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Since the 200th anniversary of the Laphroaig distillery in 2015 they released a few single malts of higher age. Older whiskies are getting less common for many distilleries because the prices of whisky casks are increasing more and more. So I was really excited to try this Laphroaig, which is one of the oldest releases of Laphroaig yet.
The older a whisky the stronger is the influence of the casks compared to the influence of the distillate. For this whisky they used a mixture of quarter casks and bourbon barrels. The last 12 months it was finished in sherry butts.
The aroma is quite light with vanilla and nut notes. On the palate it unfolds so many facets starting with the first sip that you could spend a lot of time to discover all of them. Striking for me was the typical taste of smoky medicine, oak, citrus fruits and the sherry. The finish is long and subtle.
