Fun time in the studio with these fantastic firearms. These firearms are the property of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Crime Lab Reference Library.

The Thompson was designed don 1917-1920, and produced from 1921-1945. In all, around 2,000,000 of these weapons were created.
The gun shot .45 APC rounds at differing speeds depending on the variant. The M1928 shot 600-725 RPM, the M1A1 shot around 700 RPM, and the M1919 shot 1,500 RPM.
The effective firing range was 150m, and the feeding system included 4 types of magazines. There were two stick and 2 drum types, the latter of each being larger. The stick mags held 20 or 30 rounds, and the drum mags held 50 or 100 rounds, although throughout WW2, the stick mag would be used the most.
Many allied nations used the Thompson through Lend-Lease including Great Britain, China, and the USSR, and so it saw pretty much every Front of the conflict.
This picture is particularly special. German paratroopers, Hitler's elite, finding a captured Thompson and seeing for themselves what they have been fighting first hand. You will notice they are also carrying a machine gun.
The British were in love with the Thompson, but in the early years, it was just too hard to get, and thus they had to create an alternative, mass produced submachine gun that is very similar to the American Grease Gun. It was known as the Sten Gun, and it featured a magazine coming out the side along with no wood apertures. The thing that made the Thompson so hard to make was the wooden features, so by taking this aspect of a submachine gun out of the equation the British found it much easier to producer their own. —
