Bonal Gentiane Quina is a Wine Amaro style of aperitif, with a long history behind, and its history bit connect with the most known liquor in the World created by in Chartreusian monk.
Invented by Raphael Bonal doctor in medicine from the South of France, where he spent all his life in the Chartreuse Monastery, where he became the doctor abbey after he was sent to study in the best university in that period by the monks.
While spending his life on the mountain near the abbey where he also starts the profession of pharmacist he collects and research numerous of plants for their medicinal purpose it and he start playing macerating them in wine mistelle and creatin the aperitif that Bonal it’s nowadays.
Created in 1865 Bonal Gentiane Quina has never changed its recipe, sharing its style both with the Amaro and Vermouth category, Bonal it’s a fortified wine base, Amaro, macerated with both Quinine and Gentian, but also using different types of herbs and spices such as Licorice, a sweetener with honey.
Using the style of mistelle wine base, common method used in this type of Amaro, which it consists to add alcohol to crushed grapes, instead of letting them ferments or stop fermentation, this technique offers a sweeter, fresh fruit tone since the fructose hasn’t been converted to alcohol, Bonal acquire all those indistinctive flavour of red fruits, plum and cherry together with the herbs and spice given by the other ingredients, with a medium bodied texture on the palate.
Bonal found its way in the early days of the Tour de France as the main sponsor for many years where it helps the company to gain worldwide popularity.
It’s great Aperitif, which the company always market it as “ouvre l’appétit” in France meaning for the opens the appetite, It’s great to serve on the rocks with a slice of lemon, but also in cocktails like Collins, Sour or mixed with ciders, sparkling wines, scotch or bourbon, tonic water or maybe tequila, paired with food like hard cheese, nuts or spicy food could be excellent.     Breaking news: Glasgow Distillery - home of 1770 whisky and Makar Gin - launches Banditti Club spiced rum today. Banditti is made using rum distilled from freshly pressed sugar cane juice on the Island of Madeira and aged in oak casks. RRP £25. Can’t wait to try it. #banditti #spiced #rum
