Well this little lady sure made my night! This plains hog-nosed snake (Heterodon nasicus) is the fifth one I've flipped this year. This species is seldom flipped, so it's pretty amazing! In the previous 2 years I never flipped one and only found a combined total of three! I'm guessing the wet spring has really boosted their prey base and has allowed them to thrive this season.
H. nasicus is (obviously) related to the eastern hog-nosed snake (H. platirhinos) but there are some key differences.
1. H. nasicus don't reach nearly the same size as H. platirhinos.
2. H. nasicus don't employ the same defense mechanisms. They will still feign death, but are not as dramatic about it. They also do not flatten out and his.
3. H. nasicus color patterning is much less variable than H. platirhinos. Almost all nasicus have the distinct spot rows on their flanks with the saddles on the back.
4. The tail (the portion posterior to the cloaca) is black in H. nasicus and white in H. platirhinos. .

Today is World Snake Day, so let's talk about these misunderstood creatures. While Australia is home to some of the world's most venomous snakes, very few snake bites are actually fatal. Those that do get bitten, are usually trying to hurt or kill that snake. Snakes are more scared of you, than you are of them and we don't need to harm snakes to protect ourselves. If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone! And then the snakes are free to live their very important role in the environment, while helping us humans in the process! Many snakes really enjoy eating rats & mice; who wants lots of rodents running around when your friendly neighbourhood snake can eat them! Our Darwin Carpet Python Opal loves eating a nice big rat! Volcano national park adventurous day! The wildlife here is so amazing. We got super friendly national park staff showing us all the venomous snakes 🐍 and frog. It is a very unique experience and first time in my life seeing so many snakes...😱 今天是國家公園歷險記,吊繩、攀岩、騎馬、看熱帶動物們、泡火山溫泉和泥巴浴,整個很滿但太滿以致於照片很少的行程😂

Do you brake for snakes? Well, I got the sticker for you!

I FINALLY finished this design - boy, was it a challenging one. I have never drawn a snake until now and it was quite the learning experience.
•
I discovered that not all Florida pine snakes look the same, I used my own photos as reference for this sticker and so I had a few individuals to look at. Everything varied - from pigment, eyes, and to even the shape and keel of the scale. I also learned that no pine snake has the same color pattern, you can actually identify an individual by its unique markings.
•
Overall, I'm happy with how it came out. This is a 4x4 inch vinyl sticker - they are super durable and dishwasher safe. Stickers are $4.00 each plus $1.00 for shipping, send me a message if you are interested!

@stickermule produced these bad bois and I'm very happy with the quality!
