Training healthcare providers on being shame-free and inclusive in their sexual health practice is a big part of what I do. Talking about your sexual health should feel as comfortable as discussing any other aspect of your health and wellness. As a @onemedical patient for five years, I gotta say — they get it so right. I’ve had several providers and they have all talked about sexuality with comfort. On top of that, they actively normalize sexual health conversations in their digital outreach. MORE OF THIS PLZ. #SexualHealth #SRH #SexEd

Thinking negatively can become tough habit to break. Pay attention to your thoughts and consciously cut yourself off. Change the habit 💜

“Sometimes I've made out with guys and I think: wow, that was a really bad kiss but he's such a nice guy so I'm going to sleep with him anyway. He's so nice. He's so smart. He was in Doctors Without Borders. It's like you owe him a victory fuck. For the good of society, you know?” (30)

It can be difficult to experience an orgasm when your sympathetic nervous system is controlling your body because of a stressor. This is also known as “fight or flight” mode. As long as that stressor is there, your sympathetic nervous system keeps cortisol, epinephrine, and adrenaline coursing through your body to keep your heart rate soaring and your muscles tense. 😕 When that stressor goes away, your parasympathetic nervous system takes over– also known as “rest & digest” mode. This is where your heart rate can slow down to normal and your blood vessels dilate so that blood can flow to your erectile tissue in your genitals for more sensation, lubrication, and ejaculation. 🙂
    🔥
How do you get those stressors to stop bothering you so you can enjoy sex? I wish I had an easy answer. It is different for every body. Start with taking 3 deep breaths to bring your mind and body into the present moment. 🙏🏼

Do you use accurate words for body parts? Metaphors are helpful, but only get us so far.

Looking back, I honestly think vagina was quite comfortably used in my home along with "pene" (penis in Spanish). Whether we realize it or not, there is a really interesting intersection between language and sex. Vocabulary and sounds help us not only communicate desire, behavior, and pleasure, but to identify it.

If we're not calling things as they are, we may be falling a bit short.

Discomfort around the words we've used as subsititutions, i.e. pussy, dick, cunt, ball sack, flower, rod, cherry, cock, bean, bulge, juice, etc - have their own psychology and messaging (if they've been traditionally used as insults, this is especially so)

But discomfort around what our thoughts or actual bodies are, is why they exist.

Do you cringe when someone says "vulva"? Try reframing the terminology and repeating it for yourself until it starts becoming a fact. Ask what words makes us comfortable/uncomfortable and why.

It's important we feel powerful - not dirty or ashamed- when speaking about our bodies in their natural state. And this takes time to build, so rest assured if it doesn't feel great right away.

Accurate terminology help us communicate efficiently with our parents, children, partners, physicians, and most importantly, ourselves.

    Xoxo,
