  • For my audition this week, I brushed up my Olga aria from Eugene Onegin. Here I am singing the role onstage with Opera San Jose. I& #039 ;m constantly amazed at how the mind retains music and lyrics. I hadn& #039 ;t sung the aria for many years and after a few hours of work, it all came back quite easily. Part of the reason I believe it came back so quickly is because I learned that aria inside and out. I knew the meaning of what each word in Russian meant to my English brain. Memory is an amazing thing and you can help out your own memory music studying by focusing on the meaning of the words. Even if you& #039 ;re singing in your native language, do you REALLY understand what you& #039 ;re singing? I don& #039 ;t mean necessarily what the dictionary definition is, but what do the words mean to YOU? When you take lyrics and connect a meaning in your heart, the song will always be in there and will easily return. Photo by Pat Kirk, courtesy of Opera San Jose.
