  • breath problems causing backpain? Absolutely. ---------- Yesterday I did a short initial assessment on a singer who is having some problems with her voice as well and chronic discomfort in her back, down from her lower ribline and into her pelvic crest. One thing I noticed immediately was that she was using her scalenes to breath. Even as we did some very gentle mobilizations of her neck these muscles were leaping. --------- These muscles on the side of the neck are Accessory muscles for breathing and would normally only be used in gasping or during high intensity vigorous exercises. They drag the ribcage up into the neck and can cause resistive pressure from the Abs, esp the Transverse Abdominus, Quadratus Lumborum, and Psoas -- all muscles that could cause low back pain and compression. They can also cause restrictions in shoulder movement and numbness and tingling in the hands. We will be talking about this on Sunday in my Reach Higher Shoulder Mobility Workshop at Juici Yoga. -------- Quiet breathing is often called #bellybreathing in yoga classes and taught laying on your back, however it can be accessed in a variety of postures and movements. It specifically quiets the accessory muscles of breathing, allowing the diaphragm to move the tissues most easily moved to let air into the lungs -- those in the belly. --------- After a few minutes of coaching, letting her own hand rest lightly on one side of the front of her neck and collar bone to get feedback about whether her anterior scalenes were activating or not, this young woman was able to access quiet breathing both in standing and in quadruped. She noticed the effect immediately. Now for daily Practice. When we do our follow up we will get into how over active scalenes can affect the quality of vocal sound, creating a raspy or scratchy quality. -------- -------- #scalene #breathandbliss #breathingexercises #breathwork #breathe #doyoga @immaculatedissection #neurokinetictherapy #mindbodyspirit #movementteacher #personaltrainer #interoception #backpain #lumbarcompression #professionalsinger #professionalmusician @juiciyogastudios
