#pride

“When you are living a reality where you constantly fall on the margins of your society, yet are simultaneously lucky enough to have been born into the kind of privilege that gives you so much of an upper hand, you have no excuse but to use that to do as much good as you possibly can! I will say that in many ways you could see my queer activism and more specifically my founding of QueerAbad as an entirely selfish endeavor. Returning from college, I felt completely isolated again. I remember the realization hitting me that if I, with everything I had, was this lonely as a queer person, I couldn't begin to imagine how hard it must be for most others in this city. And that was that, the only answer I had to that understanding was that I had to change it, for myself and whoever else may need it.

I've seen quite an encouraging surge of supportive voices from allies recently and have always believed it is imperative to bring them into the fold if we want to make an even greater impact in our work. We need all the bodies and minds we can muster really. However, I think as always there is a particular enthusiasm that comes in times like Pride Month, or pride itself, when suddenly everyone wants to 'do something for' the community. While often well meaning, these responses and actions are often totally uninformed and removed from any real engagement or need of the community and become tokenistic. It also often means that the rest of the year allies aren't necessarily engaging in the same way with the community at all. Nor are many bothering to actually talk to queer people and are instead assuming they already know what the needs are. We need allies to have a far more sustained engagement if they truly want to be a part of the movement and primarily learn to listen before trying to 'do' or 'fix' anything. We must push beyond intentions and well-meaning alone, especially when it only comes to life one month a year.” Anahita S, Founder, QueerAbad

*COMPETITION TIME* We’re giving you and a friend the chance to celebrate Pride with us at our very first DTHBTLLCTAJ (very long acronym, we know!) in our Soho Scoop Shop- celebrating trans and queer people of colour with performances from drag artists, comedians and more. All you have to do is follow Ben & Jerry’s, like this picture, tag the friend you’d like to bring and tell us the date you can do from the 2nd-4th July in the comment section below. Good luck! #transpeopletothefront #qtpoc #pride

In exactly seven months today I’ll be forty. Such a funny number. I’m getting thicker and softer(both physically and spiritually speaking), while two big rinkles draw the sides of my mouth, telling both my age and how much I’ve always loved smiling. I can see and feel my body changing, it’s not as fit and strong as it used to be. BUT. But I’ve never liked it as much as I currently do, eye bags and every single motherly softness included. I stare in the mirror and I finally see a strong woman that has gone through a lot (bad and good, equally useful). I see my wonderful daughter, my beautiful disfunctional family, I see myself earning money by doing what I love, surrounded by precious beautiful friends/family that I love, cherish and respect. I see myself shining, despite the softer belly, the rinkles, the eye bags, the aging, anything else, just name it. I stare in the mirror and I finally like what I see.
For the very first time I let someone take my picture and I liked the outcome(thank you @s.aranic by the way)
DON’T EVER LET ANYBODY OTHER THAN YOU DEFINE YOUR OWN BEAUTY.
And remember: SELF LOVE IS THE GREATEST MIDDLE FINGER OF ALL TIMES.
