Congrats to partner Mike Daly on his presentation today at Oxford on Causation, Epidemiology and the Law. Outstanding talk and our European hosts were duly impressed!

Gyms in Paris and London are... different!
.
Okay, so I’ve only managed to get to a couple. Not enough experience to judge the climbing here on a general scale. Genuinely sad, but didn’t make it to Font on this trip. It rained nearly every day so far. No wonder tickets to Europe were so cheap in early March! Lol But thank goodness for indoor gyms!
.
On the “down side” of the gyms I’ve visited, it’s not uncommon for a gym to only allow the use of liquid chalk, or even no outside chalk whatsoever, instead providing a couple oversized communal chalk balls spread throughout the facility. This made it impossible to keep your hands dry when there are 150 climbers trying to share 3 chalk stations. The 3 gyms I’ve been to have also been on the medium to small end of gym sizes. I’m told that the mega-gyms in America like Dogpatch Boulders and Earth Treks Englewood are a less popular model out here.
.
On the “up side” of gyms I’ve visited, the reason they have restrictions on chalk usage out here is because most gyms have a cafe, bar, or full-blown restaurant inside the actual gym, and it’s awesome. I’ve never been so satisfied as to have a great climbing session and then sit down, take off my shoes, and order a drink and a pizza right there. And then of course, the routesetting at every gym has been highly impressive. Great diversity of styles and movement throughout every grade. It was rad. The Euros like their slab!!
