Students on a field trip at the Los Padres Dam today. Learning about the effect dams have on rivers, the struggles of the Carmel River Steelhead and what we are doing to help bring them back in much greater numbers to the Carmel river. The two paintings that follow are two I did a couple years ago after swimming and filming the Steelhead in the Carmel River. It was a very special experience! #carmelriver #steelheadtrout #lospadresdam #cachagua #outdoorclassroom #paintingsteelhead

    Yes.
The world really is this beautiful.
So, who’s coming outside today?

Definitely a highlight of my day in Canmore today! While tasked with a scavenger hunt, these teachers went rogue and climbed a tree!

An itty bitty tiny friend. 💕
.
I always tell parents to remember, “process over product” during class and let their child take the lead. And they do! Explorers were so focused and determined to find bugs by themselves. Each of them had their own technique to capture them, and the ones who were unsure, observed their peers and adopted the tactic. Such proud faces. 😍

Nothing was going to stop him from reading out-of-doors today. So there he is, out there in the rain, reading
a war history book on his summer break.📚

Incorporating large trees into a new school playground means you don’t need to wait years until the tree is doing its job as compared to planting small trees, where there is a likelihood of damage, replacement & waiting years for shade and climbing.

Today, we slowed down and focused on finding tiny friends in our outdoor classroom. Then, we made little jar habitats where we could examine and play with our friends safely. We wondered how it must feel to be so small and how such teeny tiny things stayed safe. Explorers were so engaged in this activity that an hour of playtime wasn’t nearly enough! 🐜 🐌🐞
.
Tip: If you are having difficulty finding some tiny critters, pour water over dirt patches and wait for friends to come up and play! 💦

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade🍋

Simply put, today was magical✨ We spent all morning outside drawing, painting, creating potions, building forts and of course, making lemonade. A huge thanks to @prekwolfpack and @friendsartlab who were my inspirations behind today’s activities!

Happy Friday!!! As usual, the short week felt longer than a normal week 😂 This afternoon had some challenges but this morning was BLISS ✨

We walked to a local park for our morning block and there was the cutest little (and very dense) forest to explore. I was in it for close to two hours exploring with students 🌱 They had to be close enough to see me at all times but otherwise had free reign to climb, jump and be free 💕 We found Lamb’s Ear Plants, Trilliums, fallen logs, stumps and so much more! One of my students came so alive today that I was close to tears. I’ve never seen him so happy and outgoing and we spent so much quality learning time together. The students had to practice “viens ici” and “regarde” if they wanted my attention! It was truly my ideal morning 🥰

Are you bored of my “I love outdoor education” posts yet?! Hope not because I can’t stop and won’t stop.

MY BIGGEST REGRET IN COLLEGE was waiting until senior year to go on a @usd_outdooradventures trip! 🏜That was the inspiration behind our first ever HIVE FIVE college list: 5 perfect colleges for outdoor enthusiasts. 🧗🏼‍♀️🚴🏼‍♀️🏄🏽‍♀️🧘🏻‍♀️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Whether you like swimming, hiking, climbing, or playing in the snow, these five colleges will have you feeling like you're at summer camp year-round (with a degree at the end- woohoo). 🏕🌊🌻📝🎓
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If I knew #3 existed when I was in high school, I definitely would have applied! 🐠 Check it out on the blog and tell me which school makes you want to get outside in the comments below. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(These pics are from an epic backpacking trip to Havasupai Falls in the Grand Canyon. While most of my friends planned beach days in Cabo, I learned how to pitch a tent, swam in these waterfalls, and disconnected for a week. I definitely had the better Spring Break!!)

    OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY!

On Outdoor Classroom Day yesterday, thousands of teachers across the globe, including our Pre-Prep teachers, took their classes outside to play and learn! Our Grade Rs explored Arderne Gardens, using the fallen sticks and leaves to make some lovely land art. Not only did they have fun, but they showed the world why time outdoors should be part of every school day!

I've been sharing my heart and thoughts in my stories the last couple days and am loving all the messages you guys are sending me in reply. Encouragement, questions, advice. This space truly is valuable if used correctly. I do hope that my itty bitty corner of Instagram is a place you can come to get inspiration and encouragement, but also that you know that I'm right in the trenches with you, not really knowing what I'm doing and figuring it out alongside you. Many, many of you are more seasoned than I, and I LOVE learning from you. I feel like I have virtual mentors. All of that to say, thanks for being here, letting me be me, and for encouraging me along this journey of home education. We're doing it, mamas! Happy weekend! 🌿

I don’t have many of these rainbow hand kites left in my shop...I guess it’s not just me that loves toys that get my kids running around outside to burn off energy! 🤪 Check them out by clicking the link in my profile. And how pretty are these white flowers? They are the only flower in bloom in our yard right now - finally a sign that warm weather is coming! ☀️

My favourite thing about birthing my youngest two at home was all the food we ate between contractions. It was a party! And my favourite thing about schooling at home (I have so many favourites) is all the tea and snacks we enjoy while we learn.☕️ Food makes any event that much better -even the painful events, like birthing a baby.👶🏼👶🏻👶🏼👶🏼
.
On another note... we’ve completed our curriculum for this year and are officially on summer break.🙌🏽 This will be our last picture of all of us around the table for now since we’ve moved all our play and learning to the great outdoors.🌳🦋🐛
