We opened up a SECOND forest classroom this week to accommodate the growing demand for our program and welcome even more kiddos into nature. The theme of the day was “build and imagine” as the kids utilized loads of loose parts to make a spaceship and playground. “Loose parts” is a technical term that basically means “stuff that can become anything.” As opposed to a toy that has only one designated purpose (like a doll or truck), sticks and logs and pine cones and boards can become whatever the kids choose them to be. This type of physical, cooperative, and imaginative play lays a strong foundation for more structured learning to come.
🌿
In the other classroom we saw a lot of artistic and imaginative play as children colored stumps and wood slices, which they “sold” as cakes. In both classes the day ended where it always does, in the water! We’re so fortunate to have this beautiful nature preserve as our school :)

Getting outside each day doesn't mean you have to plan daily hikes or have an elaborate back yard with a variety of equipment. Sometimes getting outside means grabbing a book, some games, drawing materials, a blanket and some rope and just hanging around together relaxing. Instagram is so full of images of homeschoolers in the woods, by the sea/lake or in meadows frolicking about and discovering all nature has to offer. If those things are close and easily accessible to you or your family, that is a wonderful! But sometimes the kids and I don't actually *want* to leave our little plot. Sometimes I don't want to pack lunches and the kids don't want to trek (I actually never want to pack lunches, let's be honest 🤣) and while we do get plenty of time out and about, much of it is spent in our neighbourhood. And that's okay too! Did you hear me?? It's okay not to trek! It's okay to just hang out and look at one square foot of grass or soil. Or, like my son above, grab a book and hang on a deck! Or like my daughter and head out with pencils and paper and then end up playing with rope and the tree. When you spend time outdoors, just hanging out without any agenda, play still happens, it just looks different than trekking! And it doesn't required packed lunches 😉

"Every child is born a naturalist. His eyes are, by nature, open to the glories of the stars, the beauty of the flowers, and the mystery of life."- R. Search

Our girls love nothing more ghab pottering about in the garden and exploring it in their own way 🌲 They are particularly fond of organising plant labels into lots of different pots 😂

How do your little ones enjoy their time in the garden? 🌱

Move over buddy bench, Hello Outdoor Classroom! .
I’m excited to see that our school has begun construction of our new outdoor classroom. Our parent council, eco-club and the school community really came together to raise funds for this project.
The students will benefit so much from this and I cannot wait to teach here.

Years ago I was told by a business coach that “done is better than perfect”. As a perfectionist, that statement still makes me cringe BUT one of the big lessons I’ve learned with entrepreneurship is that you shouldn’t stop doing just because what you can do right now it isn’t exactly as you visualized it. Since launching the kids brand back In 2014, 3 things I have always wanted for our impact are:

1. Engaging kids and their families to love & care about the environment with stories that hit closer to home ✔️💚
2. Influencing conscious consumerism & consumer-driven giving. This year we officially joined a global initiative @1percentftp : a network of like-minded individuals, businesses, donors and nonprofit organizations working together toward a common goal: protecting the future of our planet. Every time you buy a product or service from us, we donate towards non-profits organizations such as the Wildlife International @wwf that work to protect our animals, oceans and the environment.
3. Supporting local community groups and the education system 👉🏾 (more to come on this when we launch later this year)

Slowly but surely we’re getting there. To be continued...

I was inspired to make these colour hunt cards after seeing a book like this on my friend @adventureninjafamily stories last night.
As miss 2 has been enjoying outdoor play recently, I thought we could use these to get some more vocab practice and colour recognition.
This morning she took to them right away and walked around the garden looking through the cutouts. She didn't really stick to matching the colours but we had good chats about what she saw. I was carrying bub in one arm so it wasn't something I was able to capture in my stories.
Mr 8 also loved having a go, and spent time outside after school finding the colour matches.
These took me a solid half an hour to draw and stencil cut last night, but I can see these cards being used regularly- either outside or indoors!

That's all folks.... No way we get out New York without visiting Harlem.

First a visit to the grand Apollo Theater where some of the best artist performed and launched their amazing careers.

Then it was on to 125th and Lenox now known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd and Malcom X Blvd.

The area known as the heart of Harlem during Harlem Renaissance
is said to be one of the most important streets in the world for African American Culture.

The lessons learned during this trip will have lasting effects on our young men for a lifetime.

The seeds have been planted.
We will continue nourishing them within our means to ensure that they all reap a bountiful harvest.
Their lives will be fulfilled!! Thanks for taking this journey with us.

We survived another year in the outdoor classroom! It was an amazing adventure and such a pleasure to learn alongside so many keen and enthusiastic kids. No matter the weather, they showed up with smiles on their faces. Also, a shout out to the brilliant and talented @sarahkate55 who is the best work wife an over-scheduled and often frazzled teacher could ask for 🥰 Together we facilitated over 18,000 garden visits this year 🥳 That’s a whole lot of cross-curricular, ecological, and environmental education, (with a focus on garden and food literacy 🌱) And maybe most importantly? We got to hold space for countless hours of unstructured nature play and emergent learning. Sigh...We really do have the best job! 💚
