🎞
"This Side of Summer" is a film that zeroes in on that crucial time before and after graduation that is filled with plenty of goodbyes, last chances, wrapping up school, and celebrations. There is a certain amount of fleetingness to this period where friends realize a little too late they might not see each other again for a long time -- if ever again. This, in addition to sustaining a relationship with someone older/younger than you, was something I found fascinating to explore. •
🎬
I'm devoted to making movies that serve flawed characters and their impulses. Early in the process, I was less interested in making this #movie feel like a polished "movie". Instead, the story embraces the #clumsy, unflattering, and unexpected moments that life throws at us every day. •

@violetlucca reviews The Plagiarists, a new feature from experimental filmmaker James N. Kienitz Wilkins: “The central conceit is to lampoon bad, mid-2000s mumblecore movies by being one both formally and narratively—but this parodic layer doesn’t add anything of value to the film’s exploration of authenticity. . . Even if you’re in on the joke, watching this “satire” unfold is often unpleasant, at least as unpleasant as any real, overly talky indie.” 🔗 link in bio 🔗

    Frances Ha (2012, Noah Baumbach)
Post 2 of 2
Stream on Netflix Intl or online .
.
Gerwig has co-written the film with Noam Baumbach — the director of this film, and it’s clear that Gerwig has poured a lot of herself into this narrative. Gerwig, Baumbach and Swanberg (of Netflix series #Easy fame) are the triumvirates of the mumblecore universe, a style of filmmaking that takes pride in being freewheeling, conversational, spontaneous and true to life. Actors are given the freedom to improvise dialogue and be more in the moment. The end result can be loopy, self-indulgent and all over the place, but when executed well, mumblecore can feel more personal, intimately observed, tender and less contrived. In an Indian context, TVF’s Sulemaani Keeda or Baked sort of captures that chill vibe. DM me if you want to talk about #conversationalcinema or #mumblecore. .
.
Visually, the film stays true to the mumblecore promise. It offers up a loosely-structured, stream of consciousness style narrative with a bunch of vivid vignettes from Frances’s life. Shot in black and white, Baumbach pays homage to the masters of Nouvelle Vague or the French New Wave and Woody Allen’s conversation-led Manhattan. The film succeeds spectacularly well in capturing the New York City vibe, and channels the insouciant flair of a Truffaut film or Godard’s Breathless. Definitely watch Frances Ha for its earnestness, its freestylin air and youthful messiness. And - if you are like me - a sucker for New York City on film, that’s another reason to stream it. #NYisBae #FrancesHa #femalefriendship #essaysonfilm #theculturejasoos #gretagerwig #mumblecore

Liebe Freunde!

Sou grato e assim seguimos. Evoé, Baco!

🏳️‍🌈As pride month comes to an end, I know that if I don’t share this film now, I likely never will.🏳️‍🌈
-
I’ve been sitting on this 20 minute short film for a few months now. Quite frankly, I’ve been making excuses for myself. I’ve been agonizing over imperfections and giving myself reasons to keep it locked up on a hard drive. And I’ve been afraid of the implications of me sharing such a personal story.
-

Sexuality is a complicated topic. While I’m certainly not an expert, what I do know is this: Humans are social creatures by nature. We’re designed to work together for survival, and depend on one another to enrich our lives. But perhaps most importantly, we are designed to love. Love itself is a large spectrum on its own. We love our friends, our family, celebrities, romantic partners. And love can be scary, confusing, and vulnerable.
-

Unfortunately, not just because of the world we live in, but because of the limitations and labels we put on ourselves, we sometimes miss out on experiencing love.
That’s what this film is about.

Now, if you like grandiose plots, car chases, and screaming fights... this film is not for you. I find such things to be untruthful. Instead, this film plays with naturalism, a style inspired by mumblecore and indie filmmakers like Greta Gerwig, Joe Swanberg, Tom Noonin, & more. It is a look into the complexities of human love and relationships.

SO.... I am both excited and terrified to share this very personal piece, About Charlie, with you all
🚨 TOMORROW 🚨
For ease of viewing I’ll be posting in on IGTV. Unfortunately, Instagram has a 15 minute video limit, so I’ve had to go the very beginning and tail end of the film to fit their requirements. BUT I’ll also be sharing the full cut on Vimeo if you’re patient enough to watch all 20 minutes.
Above all else I MUST thank the people who made this film happen:
To @tommy____chan for accomplishing a VERY difficult one-shot, and for being an incredible DP & friend.
To @ellielavelley for an INCREDIBLE performance. If this film is any good, it’s because of you.
To @colingiering for being an inspiring person and crew member. You’re going places! (TBC in the comments I’m out of space)

Does that post-mumblecore genre about how hard it is being 30 have a name? Hopefully it’s at least better than ‘mumblecore.’ One of those, with the racially evocative title of ‘Olympia,’ is playing tonight at @roxfilm. But first up this afternoon is ‘Power to Heal,’ a doc by Charles Burnett (yes, the Charles Burnett) about how Medicare was used to end racial segregation in medical care, followed by a program of short genre films (including a zombie movie set in Flint, a creature feature, and one about heroin making you telekinetic 😳). All three programs are at @mfaboston.

@betrou again. “Wild Honey Pie!”

"I’m always just trying to get the work done so that I can be free—like, with the sense that, like, the real me has no interest in this? I just gotta do it for my boss. But the catch is that I’m never free, I never finish the work, so I don’t know who this freewheeling employee with extracurricular interests is. I mean, for example, the whole thing of working in all these different mediums, it’s just so that I can always be playing hooky from one of them. I can always be rebelling against my boss. Like, I’m supposed to be writing this book, but—heh heh heh—I’m writing a movie, secretly. I’m procrastinating, and in my off-hours I’m working on this movie that I’m not allowed to do, because I’m supposed to be writing this book! And then the book’s done and I’ve got this movie started, and I’m secretly working on a performance. That’s the kind of crucible I’m always in. I mean, a more normal, mature way to think about it would be, Oh, I work on multiple projects at once and they overlap, but the actual psychology of it is a lot more self-abusing.
.
I’m very disciplined. And now I have a two-year-old, so I have from, like, nine to four every day, or nine thirty to three thirty, and I’m always trying to figure out the best way to use the time. If a project is in the business phase—like, it’s already basically done—then I do the uncreative work early in the day, then I do a ten-minute meditation and turn off my internet, and that’s to, like, really switch gears and make more room. Then I’m trying to be this totally different, looser, idea-having person for the newer work that I’m doing." - @believermag

By @betrou “Wild Honey Pie” marks my second collaboration with director Jamie Adams @jdadams1 The way he likes to work is primarily improvisational. In some ways, Jamie's way of shooting resembles Mumblecore cinema. Being the cinematographer for one of his films requires, first of all, physical strength: takes usually last what the cards last (20 minutes-ish,) and they are mainly handheld. As DP & camera operator, you must be following the actors and be very intuitive and easy-going adapting yourself to what is happening on set. .
.
For WHP we had great & inspiring actors: Jemima Kirke, Richard Ellis, Alice Lowe, Sarah Solemani and Brett Goldstein. Produced by the amazing David Wade, Noel Clarke & Jason Maza. It had its official premiere at South By Southwest Film Festival and was selected for Edinburgh FF. .
We shot this film in 6 days. I would ask the gaffer to set the lights for every scene ahead of time. I would usually rely on practical lighting and light sources outside the set having some limited grip material inside the set so we would be free to go everywhere we want.
.
.
I have to confess that working with Jamie was a great experience for me as DP. They way we approached light and camera made me wrack my brain to get something consistent and interesting with almost no time, this taught me: to be bold, to experiment and to explore the edges of what Alexa can give us. .
