In efforts to help address a range of environmental issues as part of this past academic school year’s Honors Capstone, Honors Scholars conducted research and experiments, spoke with experts in the field, collected recyclables and donations, volunteered in the community, and ultimately presented their work and tips at the Mount during our Honors Program Eco Fair.

For the next few days, the Honors Program will be featuring the 2018-2019 Honors Capstone projects through videos made by our very own Honors Scholars. We are so proud of their hard work and we hope these will be a source of inspiration for taking care of our planet Earth and for the work our continuing Honors Scholars will be doing in the next few years to come!

Words can’t describe how it feels witness the talent and success of your best friends. The Black String was thrilling, unpredictable, entertaining, and brilliantly done. @frankiemuniz4 shined from start to finish and truly showcased his talent in a way you’ve never seen. Saying he was perfect for this role would be an understatement. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t expect such a masterpiece from @hanson375 because he has always exemplified what it means to be “great” since the day I met him. @drhandley you are one of the most well-rounded people, from Actor to Doctor to family man and more. @kaylifortun and @yeebrah you two will always be my weirdest friends, but my best friends- and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Your talent, passion, and commitment to this film was admirable, and you continue to inspire me every day. I have to give a shoutout to @msmu_la because without you, I never would have met some of the most important people in my life. To everyone who participated in this film, congratulations – it was absolutely remarkable. Can’t wait for what’s next! #seventhfloor #thriller #premiere #friendship #msmula #love #happy #bff #hollywood #weho #film #filmmaking

Meet Maria Narvaez, Strategic Plan Committee Member!

Q: Why should people participate in the planning process?

A: The next strategic plan will provide the direction for the Mount for the next five to ten years, so it’s important that we have a say in how to shape our future here. I hope everyone will take this opportunity to have their voices heard.

Q: What do you love about The Mount?

A: The Mount is a very special place – the spirit of service and community are present and alive. Everyone is dedicated to serving the students and helping them achieve their goals.

    Hi Ya’ll!

A few weeks ago we had an infographic on the health of your nervous system (if you missed, then head over to our home page and check it out!) where we talked about top 3 most important things that your nerves need to stay healthy and happy.
1️⃣Circulation
2️⃣Space
3️⃣Movement

For this week #Sundayfunday post I will demonstrate a few techniques you can add to your warm up routine to help promote nerve movement and and improve the mobility of your nervous system.

You should not feel pain or numbness or tingling while performing these movements, if you do then decrease the range of the movement and continue on! Try to get in at least 15-20 reps on each side.

During our final stop in Stockholm, Sweden, in addition to learning about the various ways in which social welfare policies contribute to the Swedish enhanced way of life, we also learned about and witnessed two other significant current events. The first was the climate change activism happening worldwide by high school students that was inspired by Swedish teen, Greta Thunberg, and the next was the 2019 European Parliament elections. During our stay in Sweden and all over Scandinavia we were reminded time and time again about the importance our voice has on the impact of positive social change.

Hygge [hoo-gah]. The word hygge comes from a Danish word meaning "to give courage, comfort, joy.” It’s the Danish art of coziness. In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. Hygge illuminates the Danish soul. Perhaps hygge explains why the Danes are some of the happiest people in the world. It’s certainly been quite an adventure thus far in Copenhagen, Denmark, and we undoubtedly experienced and learned so much about the true importance of courage, comfort, and joy!

    #TeamMemberTuesday!

Meet Erin Jacobs, Strategic Plan Committee Member!

Q: Why should people participate in the planning process?
A: We are at a critical point in the Mount’s history. To guide our University forward, we need to develop a strategic plan that stays true to our values and strengths, but also helps us remain a viable and sustainable institution. In order for this process to be successful, we need everyone’s input.

The theme for this year’s International Federation of Social Workers World Social Work Day - “promoting the importance of human relationships” - has been the focus of the spring 2019 course in international social welfare that students take alongside this trip as part of the Department of Social Work’s global initiatives. This theme focuses on the social relationships among people and between their relationships with their environments and their futures. Throughout the semester, we have been learning about the social welfare practices and policies of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, countries that happen to be regarded as some of the happiest places in the world due in large part to their social welfare state. Follow us as we continue our adventure in Scandinavia.

Did you know that since 2001, Norway has received a ranking of 1st a total number of 14 times on the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Index (HDI)? The HDI was created to emphasize that people and their capabilities should be the ultimate criteria for assessing the development of a country, not economic growth alone. It measures average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable, and have a decent standard of living. As our trek in Norway closes, we have learned so much about the ways in which the Nordic model - a smart and simple system that starts with a deep commitment to equality and democracy - leads the way for their happiness and success. Follow us on our next stop in Denmark!

Had an amazing time volunteering for the Renew Retreat put on by the PMD Alliance where we got the opportunity to work with and learn more about patients with Parkinson's Disease! Subjects discussed with them and their caregivers included sleep, nutrition, balance, exercise, and meditation. The goal of this event is to help people with PD and their caregivers be better informed and have a healtheir quality of life! #renewretreat #ptimprovesthewayyoumove #msmudpt #msmula #moveforward #physicaltherapy

Driving around L.A. yesterday, my friend and I decided to revisit our alma mater. I spent my junior and senior years here because the California college system was (maybe still is??) impacted (which basically means it’s overcrowded - too many people, not enough classes) and it would have taken me way too long to graduate). MSMU is up in the hills, surrounded by nature with stunning views (especially when the Santa Ana winds blow). I always looked forward to coming to classes...and even after graduating would make good use of the option to audit classes for free as an alum (mostly just to enjoy the campus again). I am not Catholic....but so grateful I finished my degree here. .

As our journey in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden came to a close, we asked our current Honors Scholars who participated in Dr. Melendres’ international trip as part of their Honors curriculum to share their reflections. Today we highlight Alina, a current sophomore criminology major and GIS minor.

Alina shares, “During this trip, I learned not only about the culture and the people, but also about myself and my peers. I made new friends and took brave steps out of my comfort zone to experience new things. I truly enjoyed this experience and I am glad I made precious memories.”
