#CuttingRoomAntics: The #ThrowbackThursday exercise continues. On time, no less.

Seeing the #MandalorianMercsCostumeClub at #Momocon2018 was a present to behold, but this singular portrait holds a special place in my favorites. Not only is it one of my favorite Mandalorian armors I’ve seen in person, but the design and background behind it is a firm reminder to those who need one that creation, art, fandom, and all the beautiful things that come in between, is for everyone.
In contrast to the hyperstylized edit last week, I decided to dial it back to bare basics when revisiting this photo. The subject, her costume and her character are doing the heavy lifting, so I resigned myself to simply be the best window for her image. To do this, I revisited a couple color theory basics: instead of ruining the image with a vibrance and/or saturation boost, I instead looked to the colors of the costume and muted the complimentary colors in the photo, which—in this case—are the blues and greens. The hues left in prominence exist in an analgous relationship with the creator’s work.

Other than that, I crunched the tonal curve on both ends: no true blacks or true whites in this photo. The vignette and radial filter combo make a return to my process to bring our subject further into the foreground. Finally, bit of noise puts a neat little bow on this exercise.

I’ve seen a lot of Dr Strange costumes with the acrylic spell mandala, but I’m surprised I haven’t seen this done before. I would’ve loved to add sparklers for the spark effect though that would be banned in a heartbeat at a convention. My next step is to figure out a pulley system to hide it up my sleeve like the magician Dr Strange is...

Tried out graphite polishing for the Captain Canada belt buckle! First a black spray paint undercoat then just rub the graphite powder on. It sticks well but would wash off from water so I finished it off with a clear gloss coat. (Ignore the paint ripples...I got too excited and didn’t let my print dry enough before painting)

It’s not Thursday, but I’m trying to find peace in a difficult position. So, #CuttingRoomAntics!

This is the weirdest exercise in the series because the photo chosen in the poll was entirely discarded in favor of another shot taken seconds before. Other than the poses, the photos where identical. The photo for today’s exercise literally came from the cutting room floor.

There’s a lot of pointless negative space that I decided to crop out, and it led to an interesting opportunity. One of the earliest composition lessons a photographer will learn is called “the rule of thirds,” where the photographer commands the viewer’s eye by composing his or her a shot based on a three-by-three frame. I played with this idea by composing just Monika (ha!) according to this rule, leading to her pushing Sayori and Yuri uncomfortably off the frame. Hopefully, it suggests that Monika overrode the composition to bring attention to her.

I arranged the tone to combat the unforgiving celestial body called “the sun,” the jerk. There’s not much to do terms of color, thanks to the talent of the cosplayers, but I did make sure that the photo wasn’t chilled anymore.

Sayori, Yuri and Monika from Team Salvato’s #DokiDokiLiteratureClub at @momocon 2018: the cosplayers are unknown.

Trying out some enhancements of the Eye of Agamotto for this year. I’m hoping to get an RC motor in there and automate the opening of the eye and bridge details...let’s see how it turns out!

We have some amazing surprises coming up that will make the year end with a bang! We can’t announce them yet, but definitely watch out for them soon. Until then we finally have our photos from Momocon back! We know it’s been a while since then but who doesn’t love a good throwback to the girls that started it all?

Speaking of Momocon, we are almost done editing the next vlog. It is halfway done, so it should be up by next week! Make sure to check out a few of our newest videos as well, including clips from our performance we did at the con!
