Pre-matriculation bucket list experience number  #4! ⁣
⁣
My best friend and I jumped out of a perfectly good plane! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is something that I have always wanted to do. Although I was pretty nervous at first, I was so glad to have Katie with me to help ease some of the tension and nervousness that I was feeling. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I’ve always been aware of my “control freak side” and for the longest time, I turned to adrenaline-fueled experiences to help me relax and have fun. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing I can control about a rollercoaster, a sky dive, a snowboard run or any other slightly dangerous situation, so I can actual enjoy the ride! ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
So here I am, enjoying the most amazing, beautiful day after free-falling from 10,000 feet! By far the craziest thing I’ve ever done.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done?!

Here's our writing tip of the day. We notice that many students tend to focus on the exciting clinical stories they were a part of, but remember, the personal statement is about you! Don't take the spotlight away from yourself 🙂. Focus on you, what you accomplished and what you learned. That's what the residency committee wants to see! They want to see personal growth.

Spent a very long but great day yesterday with the East of England Ambulance Service. As I am currently in A&E for my Student Assistantship it was great to gain an insight into the job done by Ambulance crews and how they work and determine who comes to hospital and who can be managed in the community.
•
Like many specialties in the NHS the Ambulance Service is feeling the pressure of increasing demand. Speaking to the crew a theme that resonated was one of public engagement and education to alleviate some of these pressures. Hopefully the powers that be are engaging with those on the road to learn what is needed because at the end of the day they know better than anyone what needs to be done.

Wrapping up three weeks of surgical research tomorrow, then we fly to Punta Cana for a proper vacation. July starts with another research project, and then I start the second year of medical school! A little side note: I didn’t meet my New Year’s Resolutions on time, but I plan to tackle each of them by the end of the year. Special shout out to Leo my yoga instructor for the many ways his class has helped me grow. Beyond excited to be at this place in life.

Time management is about identifying what is important and allocating enough time each day to working on those important things. Something most people don’t do. Instead, most people allow the loudest to get their attention. Often the loudest is not the most important, but because it is loud, it deceives us into thinking it is the most important thing
.
Time management is also about focusing your resources in the right places. Pretty much like all management skills, managing a sports team is about using your players in a way that will get the best out of them. A good team manager does not ask a great defender to become an attacker. A good team manager puts their best defender in the best place for them to be, defending. Time management is the same thing. Good time management is not leaving your latest class assignment until the night before it is due, good time management is starting the assignment as soon as the assignment is given so you know exactly what research needs doing and how much time you are going to need to write the best assignment you can write
.

To become good at time management is where you create a plan for the day and make sure it happens. At the top of your plan you put the one or two things you really want to achieve that day and before you do anything else, you focus all your time and attention to getting them done. I always recommend you do the next day’s planning the night before. That way when you wake up you know exactly what it is you want to achieve and you can start the moment you wake up going about achieving it. Quite often you will find that by lunchtime you have completed the tasks you wanted to achieve, you can then spend the rest of the day getting on with the next important things
.

Time management does not mean you spend every minute of the day doing work. Time management means you are managing what you are doing with your time. If you enjoy social media, playing computer games and hanging out with your friends, then great, allow yourself time to do those things. Just don’t allow those activities to take over the whole twenty-four hours in your day
.

We are given the same amount of time each day — twenty-four hours

🚨Don’t swipe if you get queasy easily!!🚨
.
Even though the first picture is pretty gross already! 😂 But this is me assisting in on an abdominoplasty! I’m holding onto this patient’s adipose tissue lol

We ended up removing 27 lbs of fat! 😱 wildddd (last picture)
.
Probably the most interactive and coolest surgery I’ve gotten to be a part of thus far!

Whatcha think? Cool or gross? Lol 👍🏼 or 👎🏼

Oh what I difference confidence makes...
.
The picture on the left is from my very first trip to Ireland in 2011. I was so excited - it was my very first time in Europe and I was traveling around Ireland and England for two weeks. I remember taking this picture - we had just climbed up this hill to enjoy the view and I was so out of breath. My knee was killing me. I was already self conscious about the climb back down. I did not want a picture of me - AT ALL.
.
I have maybe 3 pictures of me from that trip to Ireland. I was self conscious. Hated how I looked. Couldn’t walk far without my knee or back hurting. I was so uncomfortable in my own skin. I LOVED that trip, but I have next to no pictures to remember it by.
.
Fast forward to last week - my 3rd trip to Ireland and it couldn’t have been more different than the others.
.
This was the first trip I’ve been on when I’ve felt confident - where I’ve wanted pictures of me to remember the beautiful places I visited, not just pictures of the sites. .
It felt good to hike up giant hills, adventure around different sites, walk through countless towns without ever worrying if I was physically capable of doing it. It felt good to be able to move my body because I saw so many people who couldn’t see things they’d wished to see because their bodies were differently abled.
.
Health and fitness is not a punishment. It is a celebration of what your body is capable of doing!
.
Health and fitness is not just about losing weight, or looking a certain way. It’s about feeling confident in your own skin. It’s about being able to do anything you want to do, and being able to see all that you want to do in this life.
.
I am thankful for my body, and all that it allows me to do. I am thankful that I found a solution for health and fitness that helps me THRIVE in this life, rather than just surviving it.
.
I’m kicking off another round of my bootcamp FIGHT TO THRIVE on July 1st because it would be selfish of me to not share this with others!! These groups, these workouts, this nutrition program - they are helping me THRIVE, and you can too! Shoot me a message and let’s chat! Let’s thrive together!!!

Been meaning to post this forever but kept getting caught up with other things. This was about a month or so ago right after finals, finishing my thesis, and finding out it was accepted and that I’d be graduating with my degree in biology after 4,387 years of undergrad 🎓☺️ it was a very welcome break from what felt like constant 10-16 hour days in the library along side all my 12 hour shifts. A really nice little picnic with one of the few persons that has been there for me despite having been given every reason not to be. Quite certain she had convinced herself I was embarrassed of her and didn’t want to post us so we’ll see how she likes this hehehe 🤣 I’m back in the library now, reminiscing on better days. If anyone sees her around make sure you tell her how kewt we looked 💁🏻‍♀️❤️😊@_tupperware.lyd_

    You See, I See

You see a cool picture in a beautiful place. I see #serendipity. My first time on Rodeo Drive, I saw a yellow car that matched my outfit, stopped quick & asked my friend to snap a pic.

You see someone who traveled to SoCal with her friend to have fun and run a Tough Mudder. I see a woman taking her first-ever girls trip at age 45 bc all the previous years were consumed w education, training, & child-rearing.

You see a woman who prioritizes fitness & #selfcare. I see a former competitive high-school athlete, who let her body atrophy through med school, #residency, and having 3 kids; such that when she was gifted her first-ever massage (in her 30s), the masseuse said: you don’t have a single muscle in your body.

You see a successful #physician and confident practicing #ophthalmologist. I see a girl that felt invisible for too long & suffered from #impostersyndrome for years.

You see a #doctormom who talks about #worklifebalance and outsourcing. I see a #workingmom who for years had minimal child-care help & did her own housework bc she felt she could/should do it all herself.

You see a #momofthree who’s #blessed w 22 yrs of marriage, endured adolescence thrice & lived to tell. I see an overly ambitious girl, who was striving to meet expectations, got married mid-way through #medicalschool, never went on a honeymoon due to time; who, to live with her husband, had to commute over an hour to rotations for the last 2 years of #medschool; who had a baby #internyear & dropped a fellowship spot to have the second.

You see the nicely-appearing outward results of years of toil, tears, self-neglect, and sacrifice. I see the toll that took on me, the desire to change that narrative, and the need to inspire others to choose a better path.

Thank you @magnolia_med for starting the #youseeisee conversation, and @amandaximd for asking me to join. 📸: @veiledfitness

I still remember how I felt the first time I received something in the mail addressing me as “Doctor.” I remember that feeling because I still feel it every time I see it. It still doesn’t feel real. Sometimes I wake up afraid it was all a dream. So no matter how hard or far away your dreams may seem just remember one day you’ll get there and it will all be worth it.

Our sneek peak wedding pictures completely brightened my day after some long weeks on Peds Oncology! Day to day life as a resident definitely isn’t glamorous and all smiles, but 5.18.19 sure was! 💕 I’m still trying to hold on to all the magic of our wedding & honeymoon! I promise to share more about medicine soon, but I needed a break 😊

Brandon & I met the very first day of medical school 6 years ago, and really the rest is history! I moved to St. Louis not knowing anyone and ended up meeting my best friend. I love having a partner in medicine and I can’t imagine going through medical school, the match process, and now residency without him.

Thank you Gabby from @emilywrenassociates !
