Did you know that in 2014 an engineer from Ladakh called Sonam Wangchuk, set out to solve the water crisis from his region with a grown glacier?

Even though glacier growing is an ancient technic used by locals in the Himalayas, the Karakoram, and the Hindu Kush, Wangchuck mange to establish a methodology from growing glaciers in desert areas in an easy and fast way called “ice stupa”. An ice stupa is a cone of ice named after the traditional mound-like sacred monuments that are found throughout Asia. It is created implementing a downstream, an upstream and a gradient.
First, a pipe is laid underground, connecting a stream of water and the location where the ice stupa is required, usually next to a village. The water must come from a higher altitude, usually around 60 meters or more.

Because a fluid in a system always wants to maintain its level, water from 60 meters upstream will spray 60 meters into the air out of the downstream pipe, creating a fountain.

The freezing air temperature does the rest, immediately crystallizing the water droplets into ice that falls right below, forming a cone.

Thanks to the cone shape of the ice stupa, it has a minimal exposed surface area for the volume of water it contains. In other words, it melts very slow, a 6 meters ice stupa can contain 150,000 liters of water.

This SPOT is located in Ladakh a region between two of the world's tallest mountain ranges, the Himalayas and the Kunlun.
