    Anheg, Dwarven Brewer

Sculpt by B. Jackson

Reaper Dark Heaven

I learned some stuff about brush control while painting this one. It is a very satisfying model to paint on.

    Klaus Copperthumb, Dwarf Thief

Sculpted by W. Klocke

Reaper Dark Heaven
I really like this sculpt. I had fun with this one. Most of the black was done with Citadel's new contrast colour. Definitely not the panacea as advertised, but I found it useful for applications where you need more color than a wash but less than a glaze.
I went with a muddy back alley road effect for the basing. The story in my mind was that Klaus was on the run through the rain and mud after a successful job through the dark streets and alleyways of some small town. I'm not crazy about it though. Needs more highlights and contrast, maybe?

This is also the first use of a new light box that I built, after buying one that, in my opinion, fell flat. Cannibalized a 48" led light strip and an old box. Pics later maybe if I'm feeling cute.

Mini quilt finish. My oldest WIP. I was inspired by @berry_birdy and her month of May micro quilts. I dug out this almost finished top. I was originally going to hand piece this but gave up. Found it again in a clean up and got it sewn by machine then tucked away again. Pulled it out this time and did the mitered boarders and quilted it. Yay. Each block is 1.5" finished. So the nine patches at made of .5" finished bits. Center piece is 11" and total size is 16". Crazy wonky but it makes me smile. Old fabrics and many projects in here. #miniquilt #WIP #ninepatch #scrappyquilt #lesscrappyminis #10yearoldproject #pjquilters17 #berry_birdy

    Toruk, Hellborn Barbarian
Made by Reaper
Sculpted by T. Manor

Took my first stab at NMM, (non-metallic metal). Not super impressed with the results, but I definitely learned some stuff. Overall, I'm pleased with how this one came out.

My first miniature painting project for many, many years! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out for a first attempt but there's still lots of room for improvement. I'll be using this Instagram account to keep track of my progress and document all the things I learn along the way. So, in that spirit, let's kick things off with some key points I learnt from this mini!

Precision
There are a lot of places on this model where I've not managed to 'stay within the lines'. This'll mostly take practice to improve but I'm also actively trying to adjust my hand & arm positioning for extra stability. In a close up like this, mistakes are ridiculously obvious!

Good lighting while painting
While I was painting this, I wasn't paying particular attention to lighting the area properly. My eyes were getting strained and I wasn't able to see differences in colour that are clear as day when I look at the mini now (e.g. the gem on the handle of his gun). I've since picked up two decent daylight lamps so hopefully they will help save my eyes and improve my chances of a better paint job.

Highlighting in the right place
I wasn't really sure where to put highlights in some cases and ended up with some of some of them in awkward places. This is most obvious on the gems where the highlights don't line up across the mini. I think this was, in part, due to me painting in sub-assemblies but also probably from me rushing a bit and not thinking it all through well enough.

Priming
After priming, I noticed a slightly rough texture all over the model. Unfortunately this persisted and is even more noticeable now. After some research, it seems likely that I was priming from too far away. Just a theory for now but I'll keep a close eye on how the next ones go.

Overall, a really fun first project. I've got a few more guardians lined up after this one so hopefully we'll see some improvements!
