  • The red earth, rich in iron oxide, that makes up much of our North has been captured in this bowl. For those who have visited the Pilbara in Western Australia, you will see the colours reflected perfectly. I can't quite believe how stunning this glaze actually is. It is a true bright orange sprinkled with lighter less deep oranges and has silvery lines on the inside which create contrast, just like those found in the rock faces. These colours are the result of multiple glaze applications. The darker, slightly shiny, rim glaze bleeds into the orange glaze and creates an undulating effect around the bowl. The rugged Australian Outback is captured perfectly on the outside of the bowl with a very rich textured volcanic/lava glaze section (also called crater glaze.) It is variations of browns and deep pickets where the glaze has risen and burst and those reactions have been captured and frozen in time. To pick up this bowl you first feel the roughness of the volcanic glaze on your fingers, then as you lift it you see the sparkles that are held within the glaze on the inside (you should see it in the sun!) There is so much to see and explore. It is made from an iron rich Australian clay which assists the depth of the glazes. The foot area has been carefully hand-trimmed (very time consuming) and gives it a lovely stepped area on which to rest. There is so much to like about this one, I am going to find it hard to let it go. If you love it as much as I do then pop to my Etsy shop and check it out. See my bio for the link. Sharing some Pilbara orange magic today.

  • Line blends in cup form. At the far left are cups made with @woodfire’s porcelain recipe. As you move down the line there are increments of 2% Cedar Heights Redart clay added To the recipe all the way up to 20%. The redart clay is a way of introducing iron into the clay body which plays a huge roll in the final color palette of the fired clay. My goal is to find the minimum amount of iron that I need to add to the porcelain to achieve my desired color palette. I should also be able to find the maximum amount I can add before it begins to flux the clay body too much and begin showing defects such as slumping, bloating, or dunting. I’ve got at least two of each test scattered about in the kiln. I’m almost more excited about these than I am the rest of the work!!😆 I’ll be sure to post some of the finished ones and share the differences!
