Does your guitar tech go to this level in attention to detail when maintaining your guitar? If not, ask why.

This 30+ year old Kahler Flyer is getting a couple new wide string hooks and rollers to accept 11-64 gauge strings and get tuned to a disgusting drop G on this late 80s Korean made BC Rich Ironbird. Dive Bomb City will never have been so covered in sludge and slime as it will be with this guitar.

I'm willing to bet this is the first time this bridge has been taken apart since it was installed. It will be like new when I'm done with it. The customer will surely love it.

    Epiphone Thunderbird Pro

This brand spanker belongs to Dave.
He contacted me to give him his best start with it.
First off I polished the fretwire up to remove some slight tarnishing and then cleaned the fingerboard.
I then checked the tuning and then the neck relief. The neck didn’t have any relief, so it was off with the truss rod cover and adjust it back off. It had a dual action rod so I had no issues in putting the neck into relief.

Once the relief was where it needed to be, the string action had crept up. I adjusted the bridge to lower the action to a nice comfortable one.

I then checked the pickup heights, they weren’t far away but had to lower the treble side to the bridge pickup a little.

Then just checked the intonation which only needed a slight tweak. It’s travelled pretty well from the factory it was made in, unless it got a check up by the retailer (chance would be a fine thing😂) Sweet looking bass, I’ll leave the sticker peeling privileges to Dave 😎👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

Fraser Guitars 50’s Style Custom Relic

This cool axe was brought over to me by Ron. He’d had it made by Fraser Guitars about a year ago. I’m not 100% but after looking at Fraser’s website I think they call the colour ‘Surf Green’
I gave it a check over and it played quite nicely. Ron had mentioned that he’d checked over the frets with a fret rocker and there were numerous ones that required attention. He was indeed correct as I verified it with my fret rocker.

So I removed the neck and set it as straight as it would allow me by adjusting the truss rod and checking with my notched straight edge. I then attached the neck back to the body.

After using my levelling beam and getting the frets all correct, it was time to recrown. If possible, I always remove the neck for this step. It just eliminates the need to protect the body from files etc.

Once the crowns were all back in place, I polished out all of the scratches with 800,1000,1200,1500,2000 grit abrasive papers and then 0000 grade steel wool, with a plastic bag of magnets collecting all of the stray wire wool.

Then I used micro mesh pads to really shine up the fretwire.

The output jack also required sorting as the housing was loose. On taking the control plate out again and getting in from behind to remove it, I could so there was no locking washer, so I installed one and reassembled. Tight as a drum now.

I serviced the rest of the electrics, resoldered a ground wire that came off the back of a pot with the moving of things about and then it was on with the setup.

The neck relief, nut action, string height pickup height and intonation all set to how it should be..... Plays great now and no more high frets 😎

You can’t rush even “simple” jobs such as a pickup installation. The process includes: Securing and laying out the internal wiring; making sure all the surfaces where wire holders will attach are clean and finally setting the instrument up for good playability and string to string volume balance. @lrbaggsofficial makes one of our favorite pickup systems, the Anthem SL, which we’ve installed in this @eastmanguitars E20D. A @graphtechguitarlabs Tusq nut makes for good tone and string to string balance. #guitarupgrades #localguitarshop #redwingmn

This guitar came in with an issue with its tuner for the D string. The worm gear had worn/stripped, so as soon as the tuner had to put in any effort to get up to pitch it would just slip and not tune up.

I could have ordered a new set, but to keep costs down, I raided my numerous tuner spares and in one set I had the right type, so I just put that on. Works like a charm, and no redrilling for screws.

I also shaved down the saddle to lower the action. The truss rod was done up pretty tight, so I loosened it until a relief of 10thou was achieved.

A fretwire polish and fretboard oiling and then all tuned up to pitch, this is now back to being operational and not decorational 😉👌 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

This guitar belongs to Ryan and had a whole host of things needing to be done.

The neck and bridge pickups were to be replaced with new ones, a full rewire with all new components and a full fret level crown and polish. The Floyd Rose was also missing parts and in need of some serious TLC. The locking nut also had rounded out hex bolts.

I set about the fret levelling work but after many passes there were some dents that were just too deep, if I’d gone down to their depth there’d have been not much fretwire left at all! This was around the B string area across many of the frets. After discussing this with Ryan we agreed it was worth refretting the neck.
I selected the same width 2.7mm and went for 1.4mm high fretwire. I oiled the fretboard either side of each fretwire and allowed to soak in overnight. This would help soften the rosewood and help to reduce fingerboard tear-out when the old frets were pulled. I would have to refret this neck as if it were a bound fretboard, due to the ends being filled and finished. So the tang on either side was to be nipped off.

The new pickups are a Dimarzio Crunch Lab in the bridge position and a Jailhouse House Rail 2 by IronGear. I installed a push/pull pot for volume so the Crunch Lab could be coil split. All new wiring, pots switch and capacitors and it has sprung into life. It still has a dead middle pickup, but this could be changed later if required.

So in summary:
Full refret in 18% nickel silver fretwire 2.4mm wide x 1.4mm high, with full
Level, Crown and polish
All electronics completely replaced.
New pickups on bridge and neck
Floyd Rose strip, clean, serviced and parts replaced.
Nut shimmed to accommodate new fret height.

That bridge pickup is really tasty and sound great through a 4x12! Finally back home with Ryan now 👍👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

An afternoon of soldering and it's nearly done. Originally a Smoothie would have had a volume pot for each pickup and a master tone. I'm not a fan of tone controls, so in place of the tone control I've got a six way rotary switch. Fitting that big fat switch through the F hole was fun. #guitarrestoration #laykeguitar #laykesmoothie #guitarupgrades #purple

This sweet instrument belongs to Gord Whyte who recently had two of his electrics fettled here.

This one was in need of some guidance.

There was too much neck relief (upbow) and the string action was also quite high.
I removed the truss rod cover and adjusted the neck relief with the existing strings still on. Once the strings were loosened off, I removed the bridge saddle and ran a felt pen along the bottom and on an angle so about 1.5mm was marked up the side of the saddle.

Then using one of my levelling beams clamped into my desk vice, it was a case of continuous sanding of the bottom of the saddle until the line had disappeared from the side. I checked several times as the strings were still able to be tuned up to pitch and when I was happy with the action, they were removed completely so the fretwire could be polished up and the fingerboard and bridge given some oil.

With the new strings on and stretched in it plays so easily now, I’m sure it’s owner will be chuffed. 😊 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

This beauty belongs to Neil. It came in pretty well setup - certainly very playable but there’s usually always room for improvement!
There was also a light patch on the side on the fingerboard that when glancing down could actually confuse you as to where you are on the neck. It looked just like it was lacquer coat just lifting slightly but as it was white, it had to be sorted. I was a bit keen and fixed it before remembering to take a pic, but at least it’s now gone.

I removed the old strings and set about polishing up the fretwire and then applied fretboard oil to condition and clean the fingerboard.

Once that was all buffed off I went into the controls cavity and gave the pots a clean out.

On with the new strings and I check the Nut action first. All good there so I set about getting each saddle to the correct height to match the fretboard radius. I used to use under-string radius gauges for this, but I find measuring each string with a string action ruler a little more accurate, can set the action to where I would like to see it straight away.
With the strings lowered the pickups were way too high. I used my brass pickup clearance gauges to set the bass and treble sides of each pickup. Further fine tuning to taste can be done later, but these get it nice and consistent each time.

Then after stretching in and tuning up, I set the intonation.

Now fast and low, this guitar plays sublimely now 👌😘 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

Swipe for a ‘Level, Crown and Polish’ job. Amazing what some elbow grease can do! This guitar is beautiful, I’ll post a proper picture when she’s set up and ready for the road. Another happy customer soon to be ticked off!

    Westone Spectrum DX

This is Gord’s other he brought over. This did require some sorting. Bridge had some major issues including, string retaining prongs snapped, seized saddle height screws and no fine adjustment control for the B string. (More info in pics)

I had to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod, there just wasn’t quite enough room to get in there. I gave the truss rod a slight tighten and the neck back on and tuned up to pitch. Luckily it got it bang on first time, didn’t want to have to keep doing that all day 😂

As well as the repairs to the bridge, a height adjustment screw for the bridge pickup needing replacing as I had rusted and then been rounded out. The only way to remove it was by taking the pickup out of the body and getting to the other side of the screw with pliers. (Nearly all of the screws around the pickups have seen better days)

Once I could adjust pickup heights I got the new strings on and sorted out the rest of the setup.
A different beast entirely now 🤘

    Fender Stratocaster MIM w/Floyd Rose

This HSS Strat belongs to Gord who brought this and another electric in for a setup.

Nothing sinister with this one. The strings on it were 12’s and Gord did say he wanted to switch back to a lighter gauge of 10’s. So everything would need adjustment.

After a strip down for a clean and removing the scratchplate to get to the pots for a clean, it was all ready for putting back together and tweaking up. I removed the often overlooked extra plastic that hides underneath the control knobs and makes for less than smooth rotation when it catches the undersides of them.

Fretwire polished and fretboard given some love and attention with F-One Oil,
I got everything checked over and the strings went on.
As this guitar doesn’t have the traditional routing for a Floyd Rose bridge, allowing floating setup, this was just adjusted to sit against the body when not in use.

The neck was too straight offering zero relief so the truss rod was loosened until I got the amount I wanted to see at the 7th/8th frets. The action was sorted next. Then pickup heights and intonation were dialled in.

Plays beautifully now

Gordon Smith Custom HH T Style

This guitar belongs to Rob. It’s the heaviest “Telecaster” I’ve ever picked up!! It could even be heavier than my Les Paul Custom 😳. It needed a general setup but there was a snagging list that also came with the guitar. The guitar has a midi out and a piezo pickup under each saddle on the bridge, but it was its passive circuitry that was causing Rob issues. There was pretty much no turning resistance to the push/pull pots, resulting in unwanted adjustment of controls during playing if being slightly brushed. These have been swapped out for push/push pots which are offering more turning resistance. A classic style pot would offer more resistance still but you would lose the switching option.

Bareknuckle pickups in this, but the electronics were noisy. Buzzing and then going quiet when contacting strings or hardware, so the grounding got a check over. I noticed the switch was grounded in its cavity but not inside the control cavity. It had been snipped off for some unknown reason, but the remaining wire was acting as an antenna. There was enough remaining for me to solder on a joining wire and then I put heat shrink over the join. Then I just soldered it in to the rest of the grounds on the back of the volume pot. All quiet now 😊

After seeing the job list again in the case, I went across the frets with a fret rocker and there were areas the needed attention, so a full fret level was called for. Then a recrown, Polish our the scratches up through the grits and then a mirror polish.

Then when all back together it was on with the setup. Strings are Elixir Optiwebs and tuned to Eb Standard. Neck relief adjusted, string height sorted, pickup heights and then intonation.

A beauty of a guitar 😍💪 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

    Starcaster by Fender.

This belongs to Andrea. The guitar was in need of a good all round adjustment and a clean up.

I started by removing the strings and tackling the sharp fret ends with a file to round them over. Then I highly polished the fretwire and conditioned the fingerboard (which was much needed!) I then popped off the scratchplate and serviced the electronics. The output jack was loose, so I added an internal tooth star washer and tightened it up.

I added a neck shim and then reattached the neck into its pocket.

New strings on (9s) and I cut the Nut to a nice comfortable action. The neck had too much backbow in so I released the truss rod and then measured the relief at the 7th fret.

I then sorted the string height, pickup height and intonation.

All playing brilliantly now 😎👌 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

    Harley Benton 7 String Progressive
Karol sent out an SOS regarding his 7 string that he’d just refinished. Yes, the airbrushed ‘Paradise Lost’ artwork on this guitar was done by him. The detail is incredible! Check out his page https://www.facebook.com/GrimAirbrush/

That aside, the electronics on this were a right mess and he’d conceded that his soldering skills were not quite as finely tuned as his airbrushing.

I had to dismantle the bridge pickup completely as it was reading a dead short to ground on my multimeter. With the backing plate removed I could see the problem so I corrected it and rebuilt the pickup. It was now reading 13KOhms - happy days.

The 3 way blade selector switch in the middle position was only allowing the bridge pickup to give any output, and looking at the switch, it looked as if some terminals were bent and broken. I ordered and soldered in a new switch, which has taken care of that problem.

After that it was on with the setup and a clean up.
All sorted now and setup in drop A tuning 🤘

Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Slash Snakepit Replica

Gazz brought this over as he was experiencing problems with the nut and the guitar was just in need of some TLC and “a fettling”

This one isn’t the real thing as it’s actually Chinese made, but in all honesty it has been made well. It’s a solid, heavy piece of wood, not a ply layered one and it has the Les Paul weight I’m accustomed to.

I checked the frets out, nothing particularly going on there - certainly nothing requiring a fret dress, so these were just polished up.

The fingerboard got a clean and condition also, and the electrics were given a good clean and working to remove a bit of scratchiness in the pots.

The main problem with this guitar is that the Nut was cut or had worn too low. This is a massive problem when your open strings choke out or buzz on the first fret. So a brand new (aged look) Graphtech Tusq XL Nut was shaped, fitted and cut to the perfect action, transforming the guitars resonance and playability.

Gazz has just picked it up and seems very pleased, I’m happy with that 😎🤘👍👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk
