    Harley Benton 7 String Progressive
Karol sent out an SOS regarding his 7 string that he’d just refinished. Yes, the airbrushed ‘Paradise Lost’ artwork on this guitar was done by him. The detail is incredible! Check out his page https://www.facebook.com/GrimAirbrush/

That aside, the electronics on this were a right mess and he’d conceded that his soldering skills were not quite as finely tuned as his airbrushing.

I had to dismantle the bridge pickup completely as it was reading a dead short to ground on my multimeter. With the backing plate removed I could see the problem so I corrected it and rebuilt the pickup. It was now reading 13KOhms - happy days.

The 3 way blade selector switch in the middle position was only allowing the bridge pickup to give any output, and looking at the switch, it looked as if some terminals were bent and broken. I ordered and soldered in a new switch, which has taken care of that problem.

After that it was on with the setup and a clean up.
All sorted now and setup in drop A tuning 🤘

Fender USA Deluxe Ash Stratocaster 2013

This lovely guitar belongs to Mark. It was just in need of a setup and a few blemishes sorting out that were niggling him.

There was a couple of blueish looking marks on the back of the neck. I put a tiny bit of rubbing compound into a cloth and they came off no problem.

He also reported an issue with the trem arm. It wasn’t your usual Strat style one, but I have seen this type before. You need to put the arm in and apply downward pressure to dive the trem and then look at the block to find a set screw/grub screw. There are actually two but you need to totally remove the block to see the depth stop one. If you nip up the one that is easily seen though, the trem arm will then behave itself.

I widened the Nut slots with my files and then strung the guitar back up.

Once tuned to pitch I adjusted the neck relief, lowered the string action, set the pickup heights and then tweaked the intonation.

A final clean and now this is singing like a Strat should 🤘😎 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

From the bench today, a serious overhaul and modifications on a Vintage SG. This guitar came in with a realy bad fret dress, it didn’t hold tune and tone was lacking. Full fret levelling, crowned and polished, machine heads swapped out for 19:1 ratio lockers, capacitors up graded to oil/paper women tone, a good clean up, elixir strings and she’s a little monster 🤘🤘😎😎 #guitarrepair #luthier #guitarupgrades #vintage #sg #gibson #birmingham @cainp15

Washburn WI66ANC BSG1 Nick Catanese Signature No 48 of 50.

This was brought over by Luke “The Switch Strangler” 😂. Like his Les Paul Custom Axcess I sorted a little while back, it was experiencing a poor connection when the bridge pickup was selected, so a noticeable loss in volume.

I got into the switch cavity to take the switch out to get to the contacts. There wasn’t quite enough wire to let me take it out, so I had to remove the neck pickup to gain access to the rest of the wire to gain a bit more slack to help me remove it. I took out the pickup ring screws and as EMG pickups have the push-on connectors on them, I was able to just take it off completed to prevent the body from being scratched.

After the switch was fixed and everything back together, I gave the pots a clean, the output jack prongs a little more grip, the frets a polish and the fingerboard an oiling, it was then on with the setup.

Not only is this guitar extremely rare, it absolutely wails. I enjoyed testing it out. It’s also signed by the man himself. Love it 👍👍🤘🤘😎 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

Gibson Custom Shop Les Paul Slash Snakepit Replica

Gazz brought this over as he was experiencing problems with the nut and the guitar was just in need of some TLC and “a fettling”

This one isn’t the real thing as it’s actually Chinese made, but in all honesty it has been made well. It’s a solid, heavy piece of wood, not a ply layered one and it has the Les Paul weight I’m accustomed to.

I checked the frets out, nothing particularly going on there - certainly nothing requiring a fret dress, so these were just polished up.

The fingerboard got a clean and condition also, and the electrics were given a good clean and working to remove a bit of scratchiness in the pots.

The main problem with this guitar is that the Nut was cut or had worn too low. This is a massive problem when your open strings choke out or buzz on the first fret. So a brand new (aged look) Graphtech Tusq XL Nut was shaped, fitted and cut to the perfect action, transforming the guitars resonance and playability.

Gazz has just picked it up and seems very pleased, I’m happy with that 😎🤘👍👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

    Peavey Milestone Bass

We’ve been a little side-lined last few days here with ongoing kitchen improvement work - but this is nearly done.

David contacted me after purchasing this bass from Gumtree.

Unfortunately the action was so high it was a struggle to play. Looking at the bridge I could see it was going to take a shim to get this anywhere near playable so once the old strings were off, that was my first thing to tackle.

Giving it all a good deep clean was also needed, alongside servicing the electrics and polishing the fretwire to remove the tarnishing.

Once the new strings were on, it was almost bang-on where the action needed to be. I checked the neck relief and it needed a bit of a tweak, but only slight.

The only thing letting the side down was the 16th fret was so high, anything played around 14 or 15 was instantly buzzing and choked out.

I filed the height so it was level, recrowned it and then polished out all of the tool marks/scratches.

It now plays effortlessly and David is over the moon with it 😎👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

Back at it y'all! This time I made a series of video clips to document the upgrade process and hopefully keep some of you entertained while learning something new 😁

I'll do my best to pack in as much as I can while also keeping it concise and fun.

This first group of vids is more of an intro/overview of what I'll be up to over the next few days/week or so.

    BC Rich Mockingbird Special

Lovely guitar, needed a check over and setup. The bridge controls were catching on the body and looking at the speed nobs, there was some internal damage that it could see, so it may have taken an impact in this area, forcing the nobs against the body.

I plugged it in to test the electrics, this one is fitted with a set of Seymour Duncan Invader pickups, but the neck pickup sounded very thin and it was quite close to the strings.....neck pickups are usually warm sounding, sometimes even described as ‘muddy’, so this really was strange. The 3 way switch was operating side-side instead of up and down, but the bridge volume was controlling the neck pickup and vice-versa.

I was going to service the electrics anyhow so off came the covers. Although there are really no rules when it comes to control layout, convention is that the group of two nobs as you look down at the guitar in the playing position control the Volume and Tone for Neck pickup and the two underneath for the Bridge. This was upside down because whoever installed the Invaders had mixed them up. Likewise, the pickup was wired to ‘jumper’ leads coming from the pots and then twisted to the wires coming from the pickups and then covered with good old electrical tape. Not a fan of that.

So I removed the tape and the jumpers and wired them (the conventional way round) to the pots themselves. Any wires that needed insulating were taken care of with proper heat shrink tubing. A lot tidier and better insulated. Whilst sorting this, I saw that the red and white that are usually soldered together were in contact with the ground wires, effectively shorting one of the coils to ground, explaining the ‘thin’ sound I was getting on the neck pickup. Might be nice as an option in future to chuck in a push/push pot and wire the coils so they can be split - but then returned back to humbuckers.

    Washburn Taurus T24

Roger contacted me through a recommend from another regular customer of mine, Ken.

I was given a heads-up the electrics were doing some odd things. They appeared to work against each other. With the neck pickup volume at max and bridge off there was sound. Opposite way round - sound again, but with both at max-nothing.
Given the “tap test” the bridge pickup was not giving any output at all in any configuration. I checked it with a multimeter and it wasn’t a dead pickup. Inside the control cavity I was expecting to see two volume pots wired differently to one another, but they weren’t!! It wasn’t until I started tracing the wiring around I noticed the bridge tone pot’s ground wire had been melted through by solder and was shorting on the conductor to the volume pot. Stripped that out, resoldered and hey presto, the bridge pickup sprang into life- and turning the pots clockwise turned up the volumes independently, and back down the other way. Great!

The fretwire was polished, fretboard cleaned and conditioned, new strings, neck relief adjusted, nut action checked, string action lowered and radiused with fretboard, pickup heights adjusted and intonation set.

Plays great now and behaves as it should!! 💪👍🤘🍻 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

    Gibson Les Paul Custom Axcess

Luke contacted me about a problem he was getting when switching from bridge to neck pickup.

Most of the time the guitar behaved as normal, but on occasion when selecting the neck pickup the volume was very weak.

He brought it round and I gave it a look over. All of the solder joints looked good, so I thought I would look at the switch itself to check that the spring prongs inside were making good contact.

It only takes a fraction of a millimetres gap, nothing you’d see easily with the naked eye, but it did seem that the bridge had stronger contact than the neck. I checked this with a toothpick (as they are non conductive, won’t short to ground on the switch casing) and it was far easier to disturb the neck too, so this must be the problem. Over enthusiastic switching over time! 😉👍 I gently bent both the neck and bridge prongs so they both had much stronger contact.
I also gave the electrics a complete servicing as the pots were crackling when adjusted.

Beautiful guitar. The neck cutaway makes reaching the upper frets easy, not like on my own LP Custom with the traditional body/neck joint and it’s also thinner and has weight relief, unlike mine which is like wearing a Ford Focus round your neck all evening!.....not that I’m complaining 😂

So gutted my plaster-cast is still on, as I’d have loved to spend the evening playing it - to fully confirm the clearance of the problem of course! 😉😉🤔🤔 - I’ll have to get him to bring it back for a setup 😍👍 www.the-setup-shop.co.uk

    ESP-LTD Truckster (James Hetfield Signature)

The second of Freddy’s guitars of Moretallica.

I like the Snakebyte very much, but I’ve always been more comfortable with a Les Paul shaped object in my hands.

This was one James Hetfield’s first signature guitars released that I can remember apart from a Flying V style and a SG lookalike, both that had hot rod style flames on.

This again comes with Tonepros locking bridge and tailpiece, EMG 81/60 active pickups, Sperzel locking tuners that Hetfield himself obviously likes.

This was to be setup in D standard, so that can mean only one thing to a guitarist who likes Metallica.........”SAD BUT TRUUUUUUEEEE!!!” 😂🤘 Neck relief, nut action, string action, electronics serviced and pickup heights adjusted and intonation set and a minor repair to a loose pot, it’s ready to go out and chug the house down once more 🤘

Be sure to catch Moretallica’s next gig at the Old Wine Vaults, Eastwood on 16th Feb.

    ESP-LTD Snakebyte (James Hetfield Signature)

This belongs to Freddy, frontman of the awesome Moretallica.

It’s a lovely guitar, nice and lightweight, Ebony fingerboard, Tone-Pros locking bridge and tailpiece and locking Sperzel tuners.
Electronics wise, there are two independent volume controls, no tone knobs and a 3 way toggle giving control over the EMG 81 and EMG 60 active pickups. The pots and switch got a good dowsing in contact cleaner and worked over.

Freddy was reporting some buzzes here and there and the guitar was certainly ready for some new strings and a setup.

I adjusted the truss rod to get the neck straight and then checked over the frets with a fret rocker. There were a few here and there that were higher then others so we decided to also go for a full fret level. Once that was completed the fretwire was then recrowned and then up through the grits of paper, then ultra fine steel wool and then a mirror polish.

The strings were buzzing when played open which can point to the Nut slots being too low. On double checking that did seem the case. I offered to repair the existing nut or replace with a new Tusq XL nut and the replacement was decided upon. Black would match the hardware nicely and the Nut would be a valuable upgrade overall to the guitar’s performance 😎🤘 Setup in E flat tuning, it certainly packs a punch👊🤘🤘. Be sure to catch Moretallica’s next gig at the Old Wine Vaults, Eastwood on 16th Feb.
