It’s not everyday you get to play in front of 600+ screaming fans. Especially when they’re all under 10 years old and also they’re not here for your band at all 🤣

“The importance of guitar tone has become more apparent to me over the years, particularly as I’ve developed as a recording artist. Although gear and amps play a key role, a lot of what makes good tone can come simply from a guitarist’s fingers. With a solid performance, achieving a desirable tone can often mean the difference between someone liking what they’re hearing, or absolutely loving it.

The music throughout Distant Minds is quite varied, so I had a lot of freedom to shape the sound of the guitars and the album in general. I also found a lot of creativity was fuelled by certain guitar tones when writing parts for the album, sometimes stumbling across them unexpectedly.

I have so many influences when it comes to my favourite sounding guitarists, from @davidgilmour @stevemorseofficial and @johnpetrucciofficial to @guthrie.govan @jvlofstad and @nickjohnstonmusic , to name just a few. Such artists have developed their own distinctive tones, which allows their playing to impact even more. I like to think this album is part of my long, probably endless, journey into sculpting my own sound.” - Greg 📷 Photo by @damianjohnphoto 🎧 Listen to Distant Minds via the link on our profile!

    Remembering vs Knowledge ⁣
⁣
How many licks or cool chord progressions do you think you have learned, even posted here only to FORGET them a week later? ⁣
⁣
Having a good memory can have its benefits but UNDERSTANDING the BASICS of an idea will embed the concept as KNOWLEDGE, so you don’t have to rely on memory to play the ideas. ⁣
⁣
HOW TO? ⁣
⁣
Break every line down to its “grass roots” get GRANULAR! ⁣
⁣
The example posted in this clip uses some TRIADIC ideas in the style of Eric Johnson or Joe Bonamassa. ⁣
⁣
Just because of the very nature of the blues scale with its minor 3rd and tone jumps it makes it easy to do a lot of “finger waggling” without actually hearing anything new. ⁣
⁣
What are the triads giving us that sounds so hip? ⁣
⁣
1. it breaks the monotony of the intervals found when you just run the notes that fall under your fingers. ⁣
2. The MAJOR 3rd 4th 6th the 9th are now being heard because of the G major triad and the F triad (major 7 actually in the line I used) ⁣
3. Some voice leading: the G triad I used is in first inversion B D G then up to the F triad with the E as a lead up to the start of it.⁣
⁣
REAL ESTATE :
⁣
ever found your self in no mans land when trying these new concepts, make sure you OWN all the areas around these two triads, cans you easily get back into some blues lines around both shapes, of the answer is no work on your G blues scale (major and minor) around these triads all over the neck. ⁣
⁣
EARS ⁣
⁣
Possibly the most important part your G5 chord on a loop and SING these triads over and over get the sound of the 6th and the 9th in your ears. If you find this hard play and sing at the same time. Or just choose one note to practice every day. ⁣
