With the advent of rain, we all have heaved a sigh of relief including our plants. Monsoon is the most conducive season to start home garden or to introduce new plants into your home as the low temperatures and high humidity helps the roots to grow faster.

Another beautiful summer bloomer is the mysterious looking Adenium plant. Native to Africa and Arabia, it does very well in #Karachi as long as it's not over watered. This is a double variety in a magical purple hue (not sure what this colour cultivar is called but I love it) #gardens #gardeninglove #plantpeople #flowers #gardening #picoftheday

    PRESERVED LEMONS ⁣
⁣
And now we wait.....⁣🍋🍋🍋
⁣
In 6 weeks we will have ourselves some homemade preserved lemons. ⁣
⁣
When sweet, ripe, juicy fruit comes into season it’s so sad to see it go every year. ⁣
Eating by the season not only means the fruit and vegetables taste better but it also is good for the environment. Eating things out of season usually means harsh chemicals or modifications to the farming have been put in place to make a certain variety grow. Our ancestors didn’t have a choice, they ate what was in season and preserved or pickled the rest so they have it all year around and it meant no waste. ⁣
⁣
All you need to do it pick up some preserving jars. You might even find some old school Fowler jars in the op shops. Preserving is amazing. It’s fun, creative and the end result is delicious. ⁣
⁣
Preserved lemons form the basis of some of the best recipes in the world. And once you have them in your home you will be wanting to add them to everything. It’s the perfect time of year to get making them. ⁣
⁣
Recipe: this makes two jars ⁣
1 kg of lemons ⁣
200g salt⁣
Spices any you like - we used clove, cinnamon, Bayleaf, peppercorn, allspice ⁣
⁣
Sterilise jars in the oven (if you don’t know what this means you can watch a video on YouTube and I will do a post about it) ⁣
⁣
Put 100g of salt in each jar, 1/4 the lemons and begin to push into the salt. Make sure the juice comes up over all the lemons. The fruit needs to be entirely covered by juice. If not you may need to squeeze more lemons at the end, but I find at this time of year they are very juicy. ⁣
⁣
Leave 1cm at the top and pop spices down the sides of the jar. Put on lid and store for 6 weeks until salt has gone clear. ⁣
Once opened it will last a year. Unopened it will last years and years. ⁣
⁣
What to put them in: ⁣
✨Stuffed and squeezed on roast chicken⁣
✨Drizzled and chopped on roast veggies ⁣
✨Steamed with fish ⁣
✨As a salad dressing ⁣
✨In dips - hummus, guacamole, crab dip ⁣
✨Chopped and drizzled on stews⁣

Lots of blackcurrants picked and loads more to go (I stopped as I had to get to dance class). Not bad for a Poundland bush!

    Proud @vegepod mama 😁
.
I’m pretty speechless with the progress my vegepod has made 😲 Never before have I had such lush growth completely untouched by pests! 🙅🏻‍♀️
.
Self-watering planters have become a recurring theme in my garden this year, as I’m sure you’ve noticed 💦 Well, that’s because they make such a big difference in the health of my plants by taking the guessing work out of watering. Yes, even though I’m a relatively experienced gardener, watering can still trip me up and it can be especially tough when it comes to containers sometimes. Consistent moisture and wicking mechanisms are true game changers 💥
.
Pretty sure this vegepod is going to be churning out leafy greens 24/7/365 for me now! 🥬
.
Stay tuned for more pics and updates in my stories on the growth progress 🌱
