Never forget that no matter what struggles you're going through, no matter how far off of your goal you may think you are, there are those looking in from the outside wishing they could be where you are.

You never know who you might be inspiring.

❄️ So yesterday I had a sweet older woman patient tell me she used to go to the gym when she was younger but started getting too bulky and felt it was manly so she stopped. Flash forward and she's seeing me years later for a shoulder problem and is definitely lacking in the upper body strength she needs for daily activities. I decided to play a little devil's advocate with her and see if I could sway her beliefs. .
❄️ I told her I had, experienced the cultural prejudices she was talking about by being quite a bit outside of the cultural feminine norm as a CrossFit athlete. She proceeded to tell me that I looked good, not manly. I told her my shoulders are quite deceiving in this polo, but I that liked feeling strong and capable. .
❄️ She then told me about how it looked strange to her when some of the older movie stars she's seen have defined arms and shoulders in dresses. I said they obviously work their upper bodies, but consider this... maybe our bodies are actually made to look that way! Maybe we're made to do work, to build muscle, to lift things in a functional way, and our bodies were designed to look like those women's. Instead, the majority of us watch TV and take conveniences around physical activity leading to weaker bodies that break down over time. She was quite perplexed by this view point, but seemed receptive to this counter cultural view. .
❄️ I wish more people thought this way. I wish they saw physical capability as admirable. Anti-fragility as attractive in women and not only men. And a physique as a testament to a disciplined, healthy and hard working lifestyle, not just vanity. I think I would like this world. By educating people like I took the time to do with my patient, I think we can start to shift these mindsets. And thereby remodel the cultural norms of optimal femininity and beauty to view capable female bodies as more desirable than being physically inept. .
