These mixing tips are so crucial! Tag a producer friend if this helped you 🙏
⠀
🔹 1) Cut instead of boosting - one of the biggest mistakes I see is when producers want to make a sound stand out, they boost frequencies using an EQ.

Instead, try CUTTING the frequencies that are less important. This will make the key parts of the sound stick out more without making your mix muddy.

You can also cut those important frequencies on OTHER sounds. For example, if you want 800 hz on your vocal to stand out, try cutting at 800 hz on your lead synth.
⠀
🔹 2) Sample selection is key - just using good samples and sounds will help your mix DRASTICALLY. I see so many producers sitting there trying to EQ and compress a kick to death, when all they need to do is just replace the sample with a better one. Really simple stuff, but it’s so effective.
⠀
🔹 3) Don’t over compress - compression is one of the most misunderstood and over used production technique. First off, if you don’t know what a compressor does, don’t just compress because you heard about it online. Learn the functions of a compressor fully. Once you learn, try dialing in your compression settings, then pulling them back a bit so you don’t over do it.
⠀
🔹 4) Use reference tracks - comparing your mix to other tracks is key if you want to improve. Open a well mixed song to your DAW and compare it side by side to your song. You’ll quickly hear where your mix falls short. Also compare your tracks side by side on phone speakers, in a car, etc.
⠀
🔹 5) Keep it simple - this may seem obvious, but the more stuff in your song, the harder it’s gonna be to get it mixed clean. Great producers are often very effective with very few sounds, and it also makes their life much easier when it comes to mix downs.
⠀
🔹 6) Sidechaining goes a long way - the most common use of sidechaining is ducking your instrument/synth/bass sounds when the kick drum hits. Whether you use sidechain compression, volume automation, or any other method, you HAVE to get good at this.

Received a few questions whether I mix with analog gear or strictly in-the-box. I have spent time working with both analog-hybrid and ITB mixing, and have access to both methods. They both have great traits, but due to my preferences, workflow, and number of ongoing mix projects, I've currently been favoring ITB mixing. 😊
