    Hell Bent for Leather..🔥
.
.
Back in 79 my buddy Rene told me his cousin Luis had discovered a band that was “heavier than Black Sabbath“ Luis only spoke Spanish and called this band Judasco Priesten (Judas Priest) upon hearing their at the time latest album Hell Bent for Leather (Killing Machine in the UK) I was immediately onboard (my older brother Mike was immediately defensive as we were huge Black Sabbath fans and he didn’t like that “heavier than Black Sabbath” comment) Unleashed in the East and British Steel followed quickly before they moved into more commercial territory and lost me.. (always was more into the 70s incarnations of bands that became popular in the 80s) so here’s a tip of the hat to the first Priest album I ever heard, the solo to the title track performed by Glenn Tipton (always a quick adopter of new innovations such as fret tapping and sweep picking)

Messing around with this @fender Ed O’Brien Strat after setting it up for Richard of @thebuttertones. I learned a lot during this setup, mainly that extra care needs to be taken with the Sustainer pickup in the EOB model. I’ve worked with them plenty of times over the years, but after having read up on some complaints about dead spots and difficulty getting the effect to work, I realized that I had to fudge the bridge radius to get some strings (the D in particular) to meet the Sustainer’s sweet spot.
What started as a normal 9.5” radius matched to the neck quickly became something closer to a 12” or 14” so that all of the strings rest comfortably in the aperture of the effect. I suspect that lighter string guages would probably vibrate more freely than the 11-48 set we’ve installed here; 10-46 might be a better fit. I do wish the pickup itself had more of a curved radius to its “blade” but I’m sure there’s a good reason for it.
No matter, I love this thing. This is one Strat I would definitely love to own, or maybe a Jaguar outfitted with the system just like Johnny Marr’s blue Signature model would be more my speed. Super fun!
