So sad to hear of the passing of The King of The Surf Guitar- Dick Dale. I ran into Dick many, many times over the years. He was always a super down to Earth and cool guy with great stories. Do your homework and you'll find the man single handedly created what's now known as "Surf Music." Dick's music was raw and real. He told me one time that he was hugely inspired by the ocean and the elements, and you could definitely hear that when he played. I remember talking to him once about what "real" Surf Music was, and he made it clear that, love 'em or hate 'em, he definitely did NOT consider the Beach Boys "Surf Music." He had great stories about paying them $50 to open for him before anyone knew who they were. He found it interesting how so many bands took his stuff and made it more mainstream, ultimately creating something the public saw as "Surf Music" when really, it was not. Dick had the most powerful picking hand I've ever seen on a guitar player. And I've seen a ton! I have numerous picks he gave me over the years- you can see on this one- he only used it for one song, then walked to the side of the stage and handed it to me- and the bottom edges are already torn up! I have another one that reads "Dick Dal"- as it's just shredded to oblivion! I remember watching the pieces of it shredding off as he played! I would always be blown away how his picking hand would go like a machine for hours on end, never letting up and never tiring. Dick always prided himself on doing it with super thick strings too! WAY heavier than most of us mere mortals use! Dick gave this CD to me when it first came out, and I still play it all the time. Thanks so much for being a HUGE inspiration to myself and so many others Dick, and for being so cool to me when I was a little punk kid trying to learn from you. My condolences to Dick's Family. Sure gonna miss this guy. Rest easy Maestro and thanks for The Music. R.I.P.
