    When working with copper based alloys (like brass or bronze), heat from soldering can burn off other elements from your subject, leaving patches of pure copper on the surface. Typically this is blotchy or otherwise unattractive. This can be removed, however, by sanding, or by my preferred method: chemically. A mixture of sodium bisulfate and hydrogen peroxide creates the aptly-titled corrosive known as piranha solution, which does to copper precisely what the name implies. In seconds. Once removed, you have a nice clean piece. Usually. If left in for too long the corrosion is severe. And as you see here on this seahorse ring, the reaction is immediate, especially when the solution is warm. Thirty seconds to a minute usually works.

    This picture is kinda silly and literally has nothing to do with what I am about to share. (I just thought this bag of French fries was too huge not to share.) Anyways, this week is foreboding. Terrifying. Scary. This afternoon I felt the monster of failure creeping in. The anxiety and doubt welling up inside me!!! No lie. I sat there trying to take a biochem quiz online that I was NOT prepared. I made a 70. Now sometimes I can shake a quiz, but a WHOLE UNIT AND LAB. Nope not gonna happen. Quickly I began to spiral. “You aren’t going to get into nursing school.” “You aren’t going to do well on your TEAS.” “You are going to fail.” The worst part I let myself listen to it!!!! Now the game is beginning to change. Tonight, I read this truth. Hebrews 4:14-16 says, “seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come BOLDLY to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” WOW THAT RIGHT THERE. I’m here to tell you pals, those insecurities + concerns are scary, but God promises mercy and grace in time of need. He sympathizes with our weaknesses. So tonight I am asking boldly for help. The same God that defeated Goliath the giant can defeat biochem. That’s facts ❤️✨ nighty night #staynerdy

    In addition to bright colors, flowers have one last trick when it comes to attracting pollinators - scent!

It works well on humans too! At least it does for me. I've been smelling flowers nonstop this week.

Actually, about one year ago, I posted on the chemistry behind floral scents. So clearly I'm a fan of this topic.

My favorites by far, are the orange blossoms beginning to bloom on campus. They smell SO GOOD!

One of the main oils that comes from orange blossoms is neroli oil. A quick analysis, often by GC/MS, shows a variety of chemicals found within.

GC/MS or, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, is a great way to analyze volatile compounds like those responsible for the scent of flowers.

It is a machine in two parts. First, gas chromatography separates out different gases within a mixture by flowing the gas through a liquid stationary phase. The more a gas adsorbs, or sticks, to the walls and the stationary phase, the long it stays in your column.

This is very similar to other column chromatography methods.

Then, as the gases leave the GC, they move to the mass spectrometer. This instrument can identify the gas based on its mass to charge ratio.

Atmospheric chemists like to refer to the GC/MS their lab nose.

If you need more clarification, you can go back to the MALDI-TOF post from a while back.

Since aromas are volatile compounds, they evaporate easily are are therefore easily analyzed in a GC/MS.

One study found mostly linalool (34.4%), linalyl acetate (11.3%) and limonene (10.9%) after analyzing neroli oil.

Linalool is found in a lot of other plants and spices, like lemons!

Linalyl acetate is also found in cardamom and lavender.

And limonene is a classic chemical in citrus plants.

It is interesting how it isn't always the predominant chemical.

But! This is why you must always reference several studies. Another report I found said that limonene (27.5%) was the main component followed by (E)-nerolidol (17.5%), alpha-terpineol (14%), alpha-terpinyl acetate (11.7%) and (E, E)-farnesol (8%). So there you go.
