    On the 6th day of CARsmas kincoachalex gives to you:

    Wrist Controlled Articular Rotations ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ… The wrist is packed with multiple bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments, that all intersect in a very small space. The functional movements of the wrist include flexion / extension / radial deviation (bending towards the thumb) / and ulnar deviation (bending towards the pinky). The wrists are inherently very crunchy/clicky/cracky when CARs are performed because of the densely packed tissue and the multiple bones and joints gliding and sliding.
    We perform the wrist CARs with the palms up (supinated), and lock the elbow at a 90 degree bend. Keep your fingers ninja-straight do your absolute best not to let the fingers bend when going into flexion, and be sure to make your circular path smaller if any pain stimuli occur. These are ideal for crossfitters, computer workers, hairdressers, manual therapists, construction workers, and athletes from a variety of sports (hockey, tennis, baseball, basketball, etc.) A Special note to crossfitters. Figure out how much true wrist extension you really have, and then assess whether you should continue doing push-ups, hand stand push-ups or walks, snatches, cleans, and overhead squats. A passive wrist is a weak wrist in all of those movements and leaves not just your wrist but your elbows very vulnerable to injury with higher weights and higher volume. Learn how to keep it active with CARs as a warm up.

    Compensations to look out for: The palms turning towards one another (pronation). The fingers bending, or changing position during the motion (keep them set in the position you have the most control - thumb in tight, thumb out, slight splay, no splay, experiment). The shoulder poking forward (anterior glide). The elbows flexing past or below 90 degrees. The neck poking forward. Remember to irradiate and send help from neighboring muscles.

    Find an area of tension with the lacrosse ball and lightly sink your weight into it. Slowly start to flex and extend your wrist to help move the muscle through range under tension. Perform 20s per area and work through the forearm as needed.

    If I had it to do over again, I would have begun taking care of my wrists from the beginning. From the time I can remember, doing yoga caused me wrist pain. I was told that it was just my wrists โ€œadjustingโ€ and that it would go away. The pain eventually did go away. That is, until I begun doing handstands and it started up for REAL again. Again, I inquired about what I should do and was given the same adviceโ€”-that my wrists would eventually adjust and all would be well. My pain came and went. Occasionally causing me to go weeks unable to put pressure on my hands. Then, I begun learning the press handstand and my wrists were having none of it. I injured my left wrist. Literally, the day it begun to feel better, my right wrist gave out. A year passed without getting to practice my press โ€”-or for that matter, much of anything on my hands. It was depressing, but like most injuries taught me some valuable lessons. These days I always make my students do these before EVERY class. Yes, they are not sexy or fun, but they are the work you have to do if you want to have the fun. P. S. I have zero wrist pain these days and havenโ€™t for years. ๐Ÿ˜

    1. Reverse palm Cat/Cow x 5
    2. Tabletop wrist circles x 5
    3. Make Fists ๐Ÿ‘Š and bring them together like you are giving yourself a fist ๐Ÿค› bump. Keep your fingers tucked in and try to straighten your arms.
    4. Turn your hands so that your palms face the ceiling and your fingers point towards your thighs. Straighten your arms. Lean your hips towards your heels to go deeper.
    5. Fingers in elbows out. Try to straighten your arms. Pull your heart forward.
    6. Stack your shoulders over your wrists. Keep the knuckles on both palms pressing down as you lift the heels of your hands and your thumb knuckles x 10.
    7. Reach your arms up alongside your ears. Flick your fingers like your arm trying to sprinkle confetti ๐ŸŽ‰ all over yourself. 1 min.

If I had it to do over again, I would have begun taking care of my wrists from the beginning. From the time I can remember, doing yoga caused me wrist pain. I was told that it was just my wrists โ€œadjustingโ€ and that it would go away. The pain eventually did go away. That is, until I begun doing handstands and it started up for REAL again. Again, I inquired about what I should do and was given the same adviceโ€”-that my wrists would eventually adjust and all would be well. My pain came and went. Occasionally causing me to go weeks unable to put pressure on my hands. Then, I begun learning the press handstand and my wrists were having none of it. I injured my left wrist. Literally, the day it begun to feel better, my right wrist gave out. A year passed without getting to practice my press โ€”-or for that matter, much of anything on my hands. It was depressing, but like most injuries taught me some valuable lessons. These days I always make my students do these before EVERY class. Yes, they are not sexy or fun, but they are the work you have to do if you want to have the fun. P. S. I have zero wrist pain these days and havenโ€™t for years. ๐Ÿ˜

1. Reverse palm Cat/Cow x 5 
2. Tabletop wrist circles x 5 
3. Make Fists ๐Ÿ‘Š and bring them together like you are giving yourself a fist ๐Ÿค› bump. Keep your fingers tucked in and try to straighten your arms.
4. Turn your hands so that your palms face the ceiling and your fingers point towards your thighs. Straighten your arms. Lean your hips towards your heels to go deeper. 
5. Fingers in elbows out. Try to straighten your arms. Pull your heart forward. 
6. Stack your shoulders over your wrists. Keep the knuckles on both palms pressing down as you lift the heels of your hands and your thumb knuckles x 10. 
7. Reach your arms up alongside your ears. Flick your fingers like your arm trying to sprinkle confetti ๐ŸŽ‰ all over yourself. 1 min.

    This week was crazy with practices or performances in Big Rapids which left no time for my workouts. Tonight I started week 7 of my favorite weight lifting program and it felt good to be able to use my 20lbs weights for all of the chest press variations in the circuit workout ๐Ÿ’ช Even after a few extra days off my strength is still there! As I wrap up the last 7 workouts in my second round of this program I'm looking at what I'm going to do next and I'd love to have you join as the year wraps up! My plan is to do a three week program combining strength and cardio before hopefully driving into a different weight focused program.     Part 1 of todayโ€™s sweat sesh๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ I started with this warm up with the TRX. You know I canโ€™t pass up a chance to use the straps.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ Back story time... This warm up is mostly focusing on mobility and stability. I have bilateral carpal tunnel and I need to make sure Iโ€™m not putting a lot of pressure on my hands, doing too much gripping(makes doing TRX difficult sometimes๐Ÿ˜ฃ) and making sure I stretch and warm up my shoulders so everything flows freely when I move.

    I modify my workouts by using yoga bricks to cushion my hands so they arenโ€™t impacted by the hard ground. That is part of why I stopped weight lifting bc itโ€™s a lot of gripping, movements that aggravate my shoulders and elbows and repetitive weight bearing movement.

    My OT and I joke about me running with my arms straight bc of the bent position they have to be in for a prolonged period of time when I run long distances. Itโ€™s no joke though when you experience tingling and a bit of numbness in your hands and fingers after a while.

    Using the TRX helps me maintain my mobility and stability in my arms and legs bc as you know everything has to work together. I do these moves almost everyday and itโ€™s so important to make time to stretch and open up your body to movement. ๐ŸŽถ Dan + Shay - Nothing Like You **I donโ€™t own the rights but they are amazing, give them a listen if you like country music
