Even though I’m third kid in, I still feel like everything’s new at each stage, does anyone else feel like that?! Just me?
I weaned Jessica nearly 11 years ago at just over 4 months old as that was the advice back then. Her first food was baby rice which again was what was recommended, I now know that it has no nutritional value what so ever & is pretty pointless. She was slow to move onto lumpier textures but a great little eater eventually.
With Mia, she was 6 months old when we weaned and her first try was pureed carrot plus soft chopped up carrot to also play around with too... her weaning journey was much easier & she was pretty much eating what we ate within months... I’m not brave enough to go full on baby led weaning so I think with Alfie I’ll do the same and do a combination of purées and offering soft finger foods too.
I’m gearing up to get started soon, he’s just over 5 months old now & showing signs of being ready. * FOOD BEFORE ONE IS JUST FOR FUN * - this is a great motto & one I believe in strongly, I’ll be taking it slowly & remembering that breast milk is still the best thing for him and that he will still be getting all he needs from it.👍🏻
Do you have any tips for me?
When did you wean?
How did you wean? .

Ive always said I’ll keep being a mum real & honest. I saw this on Facebook & I can relate.. (I’ve shortened it to fit) -
Say bye to my boyfriend as he goes out to work. Just me and the baby. Alone.
What shall we do today? All alone.
Just us. I wonder if anyone fancies a brew?! But who is there to call?
I’ll just do some jobs, have a brew. What time is it? Shall we head out and get back for dinner? Where shall we go? Just us.
The loneliness creeps in. Should I ring my boyfriend? No he’s busy at work, I mustn’t disturb him. Who shall I message?
I’ll just scroll Facebook and maybe the gram. See if anyone’s about.
Should I message that mum from school? No she’ll be busy. You only know her to chat to, will she even want a brew?
We play some games. Read a book. Shall we watch some telly? I’ll just scroll Facebook again... get some contact with the world. Something other than these 4 walls.
Now it’s dinner time. Maybe someone will be around after school?
It’s just me, the baby and these 4 walls today. There’s always tomorrow.
No-one messages, maybe it’s me. Maybe no-one wants to meet us. It’s ok. I’m ok. No adult company today. The loneliness is creeping in.
By the time my boyfriend gets home from work, we’re eating tea. He joins us. We chat about nothing much. I’m exhausted.
Exhausted from being lonely.
There’s always tomorrow for some company.
The days blur. The loneliness sinks in. So much so that even after you’ve had company, you still feel lonely.
You stop asking if people are free. You stick to the 4 walls, your kids and your brew.
It’s the loneliness that numbs my brain. Does it numb anyone else’s? No conversations to make me think, to make my brain whir.
I forget how to interact with people. I can’t make new friends. The ones I’ve got don’t have time to meet up, why would anybody new? It’s ok. I’m ok.
The loneliness sinks deeper into my skin.
There’s always tomorrow.

The amount of food that will get smashed into every little possible crevice is unlike anything you could ever imagine. I don't know how they do it but they are SO messy!

The same.. but different! ➡️➡️ I find it so crazy that Freddie will be five months old tomorrow! The second photo Freddie was only 8 weeks old and I feel like I’ve blinked and suddenly he’s so much bigger. I’m so proud of how advanced he is and how much he’s doing but equally.. I really wish time would slow down. Anyone else look at their babies and think.. where has the time gone!? 😌💙

If you’ve ever experienced a plugged duct, you may be surprised to learn that the tender lump in your breast is NOT the plug. It’s the milk backed up behind the plug. If you have a plugged duct, don’t massage BEHIND the plug. Instead, massage in FRONT of the lump of milk and towards the nipple, as if trying to clear a pathway. Imagine if there was a traffic jam and you could magically clear the cars away: Would you start pushing forward at the end of the line (and risk causing more of a blockage) or start at the beginning of the line and work your way back? ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Begin by kneading close to the nipple, pushing towards it. Then knead a little further back, moving closer to the lump of milk but always pushing towards the nipple. Press your other hand on the opposite side of your breast as counter-pressure. Optional: Apply a small amount of edible oil to your hands before massaging to reduce friction. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Massaging in front of the plug is less painful and more effective than using the lump of milk behind it as a battering ram against a long stringy dried plug. Keep working it little by little because it took awhile to get there and it will take awhile to clear. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
FUN FACT: Have a milk bleb? A bleb represents an actual blocked duct, similar to the tip of white Elmer’s glue that has solidified with exposure to air.⁣
⁣
Traffic jam analogy: Dr. Smillie and Maya Bolman

There are so many ways to be a good mom. Every mother’s journey is uniquely beautiful. We can find strength in our differences, cheer one another on and find that although our journeys are not all the same - they are all rooted in LOVE. Remember that movie 'He's Just Not That Into You'?
.
.
Feeding babies + toddlers is actually quite similar! There is no magic leap from breast or bottle onto solids, this is a journey not a sprint, and some days he’s just not that into food. #hesjustnotthatintofood
.
.
The #1 concern I get from parents is their confusion about how slowly baby has taken to food. Part of the reason we feel such conflict is because of mainstream, fear-based messaging around nutrition for babies.
.
.
From my last post:
.
.
"We operate in a culture that likes to measure food + its nutrients, because scientifically, we can."
.
.
But if the leap was that simple or unanimous, we'd have it in the bag by now. And if babies didn't have an inherent sense around their own nourishment, we wouldn't be here... 10,000 generations strong.
.
.
Some of my most interesting learnings have been working with identical twins! Their bodies are the same, but their pace, preferences, intake, and pleasures are distinctly different.
.
.
It's fascinating.
And affirming.
.
.
So what do Y O U need to know about nourishing
Y O U R baby?!
.
.
Most importantly, there is no straight road into Baby-food Land! What your neighbour, sister, mother-in-law, or #blw support group may have forgotten, is that the road is curvy, groovy, dirty, flirty, emotional, messy, unpredictable, and UNIQUE.

• It can take up to 20 times before a baby will recognize + show distinct preference for certain foods.
.
.
•  The most important nutrient for baby, isn't a nutrient at all.  It's an attitude;
.
.
• Kids don't need verbal cues to feel pressure, they just F E E L it. Try + relax into the process Mama.
.
.
•  Eating is the only activity that affects all sensory systems at once;
.
.
• During any type of cognitive leap such as learning to crawl, walk, talk, etc., the sensory systems are
on overload — babies will often reject solids.
.
.
• Allowing baby to exercise full autonomy / communicate cues is critical.
.
.
• Pull back your projections.
.
.
• Trust. Your. Baby.

I get asked often if I became a midwife because I love babies. .
Funny thing is, aside from catching the baby (which sometimes that’s mom or dad’s job), during their newborn exam is about the only time I ever touch a baby. .
Babies do significantly better when they’re handled less and held close with their mother. It can be tempting to touch, hold and smell those babies, but fostering the relationship between mom, dad, baby and siblings is where the true magic happens. Baby stays warm, baby breathes better and sleeps better, improves the nursing relationship...the list goes on. .
Midwifery is definitely about the baby, but so much more about woman. .
Educating, loving and serving the woman so she can love and nourish her baby 💗

I've officially been breastfeeding and pumping for over 9 months!  Go Mama!! Or should I say milk maker!? 🐄 At this point, I’ve tried quite a few brands of pumps since I clock at least 10 hours a week or more pumping for my growing little man.  I started using the @motifmedical Luna pump two weeks ago and I'm SUPER impressed! It pumps more milk in less time, is extremely quiet, very comfortable and even has a night light for those middle of the night pumping sessions. Plus it costs exactly $0 out of pocket thanks to insurance coverage! 🙌 Also, I'm obsessed with this sleek design and not embarrassed to leave it out when guests come over.  #motifmoms #motifluna #ad #pumpingmom
