What are you doing tomorrow night? 🤷🏼‍♀️ The answer is...coming out to the Nursing Moms Network group hosted by @mamabirdhendry at the Olmsted Community Church. The evening activity is to write 'Letters of Encouragement' for Mama Bird to bring to home visits to welcome baby into the world and to celebrate the transition into motherhood! 💗I’m so excited to attend with my (now non-nurser) older daughter. Also seriously how fracking awesome is this pic of #rachelmcadams pumping at a photo shoot? #reposted by @clairerothstein for @girls.girls.girls.magazine And, of course, I pretty much always look 👀 this amazing when pumping, too 🥛😜 #nursingmom #motherhood #motherpumper

While I am a strong advocate for breastfeeding, I have also experienced, and seen, the struggle many mothers go through to breastfeed. I believe it’s a struggle worth fighting for but not at the detriment to a mothers mental health.
    .
If mothers have made an educated decision around how they feed their child and feel confident in their choice then this is the best result for mum and baby. .

I was sitting next to a mother at Whole Foods recently who was breastfeeding her infant (completely covered, her and the baby), when an elderly woman walked by and said "ugh you should be ashamed" under her breath. 🤬❓
    .
WHY? Please tell me what the point of that comment was.
    .
It's like, if you're seen bottle feeding a baby, people will tell you you should be breastfeeding. If you're breastfeeding your baby, people are offended. 🤷🏻‍♀️
    .
You don't know why a person may choose one over another, and you don't know if their choice is actually their preference.👶🏻💜🍼
    .
If it's not your baby, it's not your decision... just keep on walking. 👋🏻

"When are you going to stop breastfeeding?"
When the tiny little souls I created decide they're done. "Breastmilk has no nutrition passed 1 year."
Yes it does. "You're doing it for yourself."
Yes and no. Yes to save myself money and love the bond. No because I haven't had my body to myself in over 4 years. "You only post photos for attention." Of course I do. Isnt that what social media is for?
    "Doesn't your husband care?"
Yes, very much so. Only because society has taught him that nipples are purely sexual. "I don't want my husband or kids to see that. "
Teach them not to stare. Teach them them that I'm feeding my baby. "You should cover up."
You see, with baby number one, I tried. She would rip it off. I even used fo go to my car or the bathroom. That was until I realized that my baby deserved to eat wherever everyone else can feed their baby. "They have pumps for this."
Yes, but thats time consuming, wasteful, painful and can be expensive. "Use Formula. Its the same thing."
No, its really not. I choose to breastfeed and that is that.

Breastfeeding was something that I was so excited about prior to Cedar’s arrival 2 weeks ago. The fact that my body would continue to be his only source of sustenance and primary source of comfort was such an amazing thought. I still believe those things but now I also realize just how challenging it can be at first. For something so natural there is a lot of precise technique involved that is not so intuitive. How’s the position of his top and bottom lip? Did he open wide enough? Has he latched just on my nipple or does he have enough breast in his mouth? How’s my milk production? Is he getting enough? Oh so many questions. But then, there he is, feeding, he’s content and he’s satisfied and I know that even though it may be a challenge right now, that it will pass and that I’m giving him the best start in life that I could possibly give and that makes it all worth it. #breastfeeding

My current job provides considerable financial benefits to the Australian economy, as well as significantly contributing to the health of our population.⠀

And yet despite it’s compelling contribution to society, my job in unpaid and, more importantly, completely unvalued.⠀

What is it that I do? I am a breastfeeding mother.⠀

‘But breastfeeding your own child isn’t a job’, I hear you cry. And technically you would be right. In today’s society, the work of breastfeeding counts for nothing. We only value the work that can be directly monetised.

It’s easy to notice all of the outward changes, but what I want to talk about for #transformationtuesday is the change that you can’t see. .
The changes that happened on the inside. Confidence, self love, the feeling of being healthy and strong. .
All of that happened because I decided one day that I was ready to change. And I realized no one was going to do it for me. .
I had to want it. I had to work for it. But let me tell you, it was sooooo worth it.

This is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE portraits! Absolutely LOVE! Huge thank you too Momma @nicole.calvin for allowing me to post this. The bond between mother & baby is so amazing. I’m so happy to be offering feeding sessions now ♥️ I’m been breastfeeding for over 2 years now so these sessions hold a special place in my heart. You absolutely can use a bottle though if you don’t breastfeed ☺️

    🥛Clothes for Breastfeeding🥛.⠀⠀
🥛As a new mum I wasn't aware of the importance of clothes specially designed for breastfeeding mums, and brands which offer a fashionable option for nursing in. @stylish_mum1 aims to inspire & empower more women to breastfeed with confidence. I love this black hoodie jumper. Is so soft and discreet. I now have 3 jumpers from @stylish_mum1 ⠀⠀
🥛If you're expecting a baby you may be wondering what you really need to buy. If you're considering breastfeeding (which we highly recommend you try for the benefits for both you & baby) then you may also be wondering how important are nursing tops? .⠀⠀
🥛As a midwife id recommend an 'open fronted nightie' for in the hospital. After you may find yourself asking, what about OUOD? OUOD refers to the "One Up One Down" method - basically you find a stretchy vest to wear under another top and you lift the blouse up and pull the vest down for baby to access the breast. Whilst this method works quite well and allows you to choose from many more styles on the high street, it does mean doubling up on layers and can be a bit of a faff .⠀⠀
🥛With breastfeeding clothing designed specially for nursing, you have less layers to manipulate and they offer more coverage and discretion when feeding out in public. They look stylish and sleek and you often can't tell that they have lift up or pull aside panels.
