It certainly has been a long time since I’ve put up a formal post. As most of you know I spend a great deal of time trying to display my daily work through my stories.

I’m not sure who does or does not recognize this x-ray because I’ve actually posted it before - when I first started on Instagram approximately one year ago with very few followers and people to comment.

So why have I posted it again? 2 good reasons:
1. Hopefully a new set of eyes will be exposed to this interesting case and encourage discussion.
2. I recently published a five your follow up of this case.

Although x-rays are typically less stimulating, I think this one has always sparked a lot of discussion.

If you’d like to see this case start to finish in detail along with the rationale of how we arrived at the decision of providing this therapy to the patient please check out the link in my bio which takes you directly to the article.

Here we are. 13 months after I tore my ACL, and I'm back in my natural habitat. Oh man I can't even begin to find the words to explain how glad I am that I worked so hard and was so determined to come back, stronger. Just a person, reaching for a (seemingly) impossible goal and reaching it. Thanks again to @drewbags55 for coaching me through the pre surgery and post surgery recovery. And my Saint of a wife who never once complained. I love you.

“Four different types of gum tissue grafts are typically performed. Which type your doctor uses on you will depend on your specific needs. The graft procedures include:

Connective-tissue grafts. This is the most common method used to treat root exposure. During the procedure, a flap of skin is cut at the roof of your mouth (palate) and tissue from under the flap, called subepithelial connective tissue, is removed and then stitched to the gum tissue surrounding the exposed root. After the connective tissue -- the graft -- has been removed from under the flap, the flap is stitched back down.

Free gingival grafts. Similar to a connective-tissue graft, free gingival grafts involve the use of tissue from the roof of the mouth. But instead of making a flap and removing tissue under the top layer of flesh, a small amount of tissue is removed directly from the roof of the mouth and then attached to the gum area being treated. This method is used most often in people who have thin gums to begin with and need additional tissue to enlarge the gums.

Pedicle grafts. In this procedure, instead of taking tissue from the palate, it is grafted from gum around or near the tooth needing repair. The flap, called a pedicle, is only partially cut away so that one edge remains attached. The gum is then pulled over or down to cover the exposed root and sewn into place. This procedure can only be done in people who have plenty of gum tissue near the tooth.

Allograft. This is an alternative material used for soft tissue grafting that does not require harvesting of tissue from the patient. This procedure uses medically processed, donated human tissue as a tissue source for the graft. The advantage of this is procedure is that there is no need for a donor site from the patient’s palate (and thus, less pain).Allograft (known medically as Acellular dermal matrix) was originally developed for the treatment of burn patients by doctors in the 1950’s.

Good morning my friends, what an amazing game last night @raptors 🦖🦖🦖 - we are all so close to witnessing a historical moment not only for Toronto, but for Canada🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦! Many experts are predicting Basketball 🏀🏀🏀 will become our national sport by the year 2030, based on today's demographics and the globalization of the game - and I agree 100%. How can you not appreciate the effort and desire these guys showed last night. @fredvanvleet proved himself yet again, not only with a great game, but as a True Warrior - taking a vicious elbow in the face & losing a tooth.

My questions to you:

1) who would happily offer Fred free dental work after the series is over?
2) what potential treatments would you recommend?
3) what suture would you have used to close his open wound below his eye?

@surgicalroom has everything you need for all your Surgical Dentistry Needs - your ONE STOP SHOP! And I am more than happy to be your inside guy.

Have an awesome weekend & Go Raptors Go 👍

    Jens continued “Post Surgery Follow-Up”🧐😷
X-rays look good. Surgeon is pleased.
More time is needed for the bone graft and my bone to continue to form before we can be weight-bearing.
6 more weeks of NON-weight bearing.

Due to the wound on the top of my foot...Where is the most invasive sutures were, there is a minor infection,
So we will be in a boot for 6 weeks, then another follow up with surgeon.

Today we learned a new word: Allograft 🤪😂 I’ll post the definition(s) below....
I’m just happy I’m healing... And frankly, they could’ve told me I was getting a whole new foot 🦶 and I was in so much pain I would’ve agreed… The funny thing is I heard graft and I knew they were doing a bone graft I just didn’t realize the size and scope of what they had to do. We learned from the surgeon today that they actually had to take a piece of bone from a cadaver to put in my foot because the joint space was so severe there wasn’t enough bone that I could donate to fix my foot! Sheesh!!! 😂

The type of bone called “allograft” bone is obtained from a donor (such as cadavers) for use in grafting procedures, such as a spine fusion surgery, or other major joints needing fusion.

The donor bone graft acts as a temporary calcium deposit on which a patient’s own bone eventually grows and replaces in the bone-fusing process called “creeping substitution.” An allograft bone contains no living cells.
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that replaces missing bone in order to repair bone fractures that are extremely complex, pose a significant health risk to the patient, or fail to heal properly. 🌻❤️Bottom Line- still in so much less pain, I’m alive, thank God we did the surgery in April like the surgeon said we needed to!!! Thank you 🙏 all for your Continued prayers in this journey and your support! We knew it was going to be a long road. God is good. 😉#footandanklesurgery #allograft #wellness

After I’d spent two nights in the hospital, one mandatory, the other voluntary, I was ready for a real bed. A bed where the alarm didn’t go off every time I needed to move/ shift my legs or in a space where I didn’t have to call for someone to use the bathroom or walk around (boy my legs were restless in that orthopedic bed). Although broken, I definitely missed my independence most those first two nights and arriving at my parents house allowed me the peace I couldn’t find on my own in the hospital. I’ll never forget those first days, the little details, the moments I hated the most and the small victories in between. Injury changes you, surgery changes you, recovery changes you, it’s how you embrace every step, it’s how you find glory in the tough times. Attitude is everything. No matter how low your lowest may be, the sun will still rise and so will I. #PatientDischarged

😄 Dental Implants and Cosmetic Dentistry 😃 .
We all take our front teeth for granted until they are lost and it’s even more sad to lose them at a young age. .
This nice lad lost his front two teeth in a traumatic incident and sought out a dental implant solution to replace his denture. .
He’d unfortunately lost bone and gum during this trauma. Really unhappy with his denture he was keen to do whatever was needed for fixed teeth. So we set out rebuilding the missing hard and soft tissues.
.
An extremely challenging case taking some months in which we did soft tissue grafting, fraenectomy, guided bone regeneration with allograft blocks and a dental implant supported bridge. Oh and a little bit of composite tweaking! Definitely worth the effort!
Pictures are at the fit appointment so it’ll be nice to see even further healing in the future. 👍

Series of my patents that I made during the last four years. They are all allograft bioimplants that maintain the native ECM structure and elements pave a step forward for treating diseases.
Skin patch and gel, bone powder and heart valves are what I have been developing.

So I have a lot of new friends on here who most likely don’t know much of my story! These two pics of my left knee make up the latest chapter in my story... •
On March 9, 2017 I was in Orlando, Florida with my family to speak at a Young Living Conference. •
That day I was scheduled to open the 4 day conference that night. My 9 year old son wanted to try out the #florider, a surfing simulator they had in the hotel pool area. •
So we did!! 😜😜 Little did I know that I had a Giant Cell Tumor that had grown inside my left femur, taking over most of the end of my femur near my knee....hollowing out the bone and making it super brittle. •
So when I stepped into the surfing ride....the current swept my left foot out from under me and as I fell, I shattered my left femur.....😬😬 •
So I had major surgery April 5, 2017 to repair it. An amazing surgeon here in Texas was able to repair the damage with an #allograft procedure where they use a cadaver donor piece to replace the damaged section and secure it with a plate, cement and 9 screws. The surgery was a huge success and was only the 6th time EVER this surgery had been attempted. This surgery saved me from having to have a full knee replacement so Young. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 •
The trade off though was that by choosing this surgery the recovery was going to be extremely long and much more difficult. #understatement •
So last year I was in a #wheelchair for 10 months and began to learn to walk again a year ago this month! •
It’s been a long, painful, tedious, and beautiful journey to this point. •
I can now walk unassisted and can bend my knee past 90 degrees. Way more progress than anyone thought was going to be possible seeing the damage. •
Looking back, the only way I have made it this far:
1. Jesus is amazing
2. My wife @drcindyh is a true superhero and my kids have been patient and loving and motivated me the whole way..
3. Incredible friends & community.

This past year has been painful and frustrating....yes.
BUT.....it has been the BEST year Ive ever had and even knowing the pain that was coming, I’d willingly choose it all again. #hindsight #purposeinthepain #thankful #blessed #gct #kneesurgery

#understatement
