#ColouredConversations: The Forgotten Ones is a project by Lorin Sookool and I with the assistance of the Arts and Culture Trust.
Launched in May we spent 5 weeks with a group of elderly residence from TAFTA John Dunn House (Happy Hearts Club) we engaged in movement workshops and facilitated discussions on various notions surrounding coloured identity, Wentworth as an area previously allocated to Coloured people and the pertinent issues of elderly abuse. A dance film and photographic series was conducted (these will form part of my on going photographic series on Coloured identity.)
On the 15 June we had a public open day event at John Dunn House and we are grateful to the 180 people that showed up. Our motive for this project was a keen interest in activating Wentworth as a space for critical thought and dialogue that was once functional, educational, encouraging and artistic in execution. We also view elderly people as walking libraries, filled with wisdom and truths that should be respected and shared among younger generations. The project hopes to start an intergenerational conversation within the community that inspires self- reflection, self- determination community cohesion, integrity and creativity.
We are most grateful to the amazing ladies for taking time to share their stories with us.💜

Yesterday I completed another year of life. And I can honestly tell you, it feels great. We all fear time, because we know we have a time limit. But as long as you understand and respect time, it isn’t limiting at all. Things take time, we take time to grow and to get to the places that we want to be. I have often fought against time, wanting to finally reach the finish line of so many of my goals and not understanding that the most precious memories and lessons are the ones in between goals. I think our grandparents understood this a whole lot more than we ever will. Things move so fast today that we barely have any time to stop and think. People are always giving you deadlines. “By this age you should” ... “by that age success is...”. Only you know how your timeline should be organized and it’s okay if takes longer than others, because you’re most likely building something out of gold.
