On this day in 1995 The Verve released their second album 'A Northern Soul'. Following their psychedelic debut they took things up a gear by literally writing this record in a dark dungeon. This gave their music a bit more focus, the songs were more direct for the mainstream alt rock market. I regard 'A Northern Soul' as the ultimate showcase of what The Verve were about: good songs full of emotion that are embellished by heavy layers of sonic density. 'This Is Music' is an ideal single and a great statement of intent but counterbalanced by the longer trippier jams like 'Life's An Ocean' and my favourite Verve track 'A Brainstrom Interlude'. To appreciate this album fully you need to consider the context; Oasis and The Verve were touring together at the time with their own brands of rock n' roll and enigmatic frontmen. I can't ask you to pick between the two but while Oasis flew the flag, sold the records and put on the big shows, with The Verve you had a higher and more innovative musical standard and in Richard Ashcroft a personality more tender and relatable who actually felt like he was living exactly what he was singing.

This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
— David Bowie 💫
David Bowie recorded "Space Oddity," on this date in 1969. The song was inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey. “Space Oddity” tells the story of fictional astronaut Major Tom who is referenced in some of Bowie’s later work such as “Ashes to Ashes.” The song was released as a 7-inch single on July 11, 1969 and appeared as the opening track on Bowie’s self-titled second album. Earlier this month, Parlophone released a special 50th anniversary double 7” single of “Space Oddity” featuring brand new remixes by Tony Visconti.

“Jagged Little Pill” is an essential album in anyone’s vinyl collection. Each song is well-written by the talented @alanis and in my opinion is her magnum opus. I think this is one of the most iconic 90’s record ever made (I know that statement is debatable, but its true). Ironic, All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Head Over Feet, and Hand In My Pocket... CLASSICS!
