    Warning, long post)
Today, I did something that I’ve never done in weightlifting, I broke past the mental barrier. Before today, if the weight felt uncomfortable, I backed off. I do this to avoid poor technique/injuring myself. But if I want to get stronger, I have to know the difference between pushing myself to my best vs trying to work around what’s programmed based off how I’m feeling. For example, Today, I was programmed 5x3 on deadlifts, which is a lot for me, especially when it’s almost 90% of my 1RM. Warming up feels decent, but once I got to my 1st set, it felt horrible. I missed the last rep of my 1st set. I started to think, if I’m already failing this early, there’s no way I can continue with 4 more sets. Then comes the 2nd set, I miss the 1st rep. Now I’m really doubting myself and want/feel the need to quit.
Gather myself for a few min and start thinking, why am I missing this lift? Am I sore from yesterday’s workout? Am I tired from lack of sleep? Is my body in pain? I was coming up with every excuse I could think of to not complete this lift, a crutch to feel better about it. But if I’m gonna get stronger, I have to cut the bullshit and just put in the work.
There was nothing wrong with me this morning, I was completely fine. My mind just didn’t want to push my body to lift this heavy weight. But for the first time in weightlifting, I broke past this mental barrier.
To some people, it’s obvious to do this, to shut off your mind and just lift. But for me, it’s been a constant struggle since I’ve started weight training. To really push myself past what I find “uncomfortable.”
But now, I’m more driven than ever before, I know now what it takes to push myself and shut off my doubting mind. I’m looking forward to what tomorrow’s training session brings and then the next day, and the next day. I feel like a new athlete and will continue to train with this mindset and learn new things every day.💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼 #bigdawgs #personaltrainer #fitness #underarmour #trainhard #bigdawgsathlete #motivation #deadlift #canthurtme #nashville
