Swipe left for record clip! Washington Phillips starts many of his sides with spoken-word preaching and poetry, but within about a minute, he drifts into song while playing his “instrument.” In this first clip of “Jesus Is My Friend” from December 1928, he actually calls it “my instrument,” as if even then he’s keeping its identity a secret. Within the last few years, a newspaper clipping from 1907 surfaced where Phillips called his instrument a “manzarene,” and the writer of the article describes it as ‘a box about 2 x 3 feet, 6 inches deep, on which he has strung violin strings, something like an autoharp…he uses both hands…’ Music listeners to his 78’s feel confident that Phillips is strumming, and not hammering the strings like one would on a Dolceola with keyboard. If he was at times strumming a deconstructed Dolceola with the keyboard removed, that might explain Walker’s notes and homemade description. More theories to come…

Swipe left for record clip! We’ve been looking forward to this day a long time, because we have some very special sides to share today and tomorrow from the magical and mystical Washington Phillips. He was born in Texas in 1880, and was almost 50 years old before he was ever recorded in Dallas by the great Columbia field scout Frank Walker. In December 1927, 1928, and 1929, Phillips recorded 18 sides for Columbia, 14 of which were released. We have all four sides to share that he recorded in December 1928. “What Are They Doing in Heaven Today” is maybe his most well-known song. His haunting mixture of gospel and blues, combined with the mystery surrounding his instrument (or instruments), has lifted him to saintly status for blues, gospel, and folk collectors. We’ll tell you more about him over the next few posts, but while you wait, close your eyes and float along with a little of “What Are They Doing In Heaven Today.”

Swipe left for record clip! The fourth and final side from Earl Shirkey and Roy ‘Harper’ and their October 1928 Johnson City session is “We Parted at the Gate.” Roy Harvey helps out on the choruses on this one, and Shirkey gives us his required yodel breaks. The duo went on to record another 15-20 sides for Columbia by 1930, and some were fairly decent sellers.
