'How did I get into ODISSI DANCE?' I could say, it was DESTINY!
Here is my short story on how I met my first Odissi teacher and how that meeting changed my life.

After my time in Rishikesh studding Yoga, pathways lead me to the classroom of Guru Padma Charan Dehury in Dharamsala.
I arrived early morning and honestly was immediately touched by how beautiful the alter of Lord Jagannatha was decorated with flowers. This deity was very foreign to me at the time but I could feel the DEVOTION in the air. The class started with a puja, a prayer and once the packawaj beat started I was blown away by its intensity. I was hypnotized and enchanted.
I took position at the very last row of the class and bumped into a old friend from Portugal. It was an amazing Surprise!

With all honesty, the first day I understood nothing! I couldn't get one step right and felt very challenged the whole way.
My portuguese friend gave me a small intro to Odissi and what was happening and I was again enchanted.
I decided to sign up for one month.

Guru Padam Charan Dehury guided me very well during that one month I trained with him, and I actually returned for 3 years straight after that.
For the first time I had a teacher who believed in me and gave me hope. And awakened a dream that had once been forgotten.

To be continued ...
Love

Little Meenakshi runs to her sister in fright. Not knowing what had happened, Jagadambal questions Meenakshi. A smile of joy comes onto her face as Meenakshi narrates. Inspired by the stories of Krishna, Meenakshi steals the laddus that had been prepared for Jagadambal’s wedding. Her mother chases her, she runs and hides behind her sister. “S A T H I R - Mother of Natyam”

A picture of us Praying to lord Nataraja before Meera began her arangetram. Meera has always been someone who works hard. Yesterday it showed in her arangetram. I can list hundreds of things she needs to correct from here, it’s my job as a teacher. But I believe that I’m allowed to enjoy how far she has come. I saw for the first time, Meera enjoying her dance. She had places she could let go and just be in the moment. These moments come only with a lot of practice . I am so glad she had these moments in her arangetram. Meera is also a student who takes corrections well. I can throw a lot of things at her and she will remember and do them the next time. This quality makes a teachers job so much easier!! I must say that despite my absence and travel, she worked and practiced alone when I was gone.... a quality necessary to be a performer.
Meera did a lovely job. I can only imagine where she can go from here.... a happy.... proud teacher.... Next week it is Anusha’s turn! Im looking forward to it.
