My painting is an act of decolonization not in a physical sense, but in a mental one." – Wifredo Lam —

#WifredoLam , not unlike #Picasso , developed a very early interest in traditional African art, that would go on to inspire both artists visual identities.

Mask-like figures, which became a typical feature of Lam’s œuvre, are an element related to European #avantgarde art, in particular to Picasso, and to authentic African cult artefacts.

Lam has interpreted the aesthetic of African traditional art in his own specific way, which can be discerned especially in the rendering of faces in his paintings with their flattened figures, strong, simplified black outlines, and often mask-like features.
