.
Three five-claw dragons with sinuous bodies intertwined in search of the fiery pearl located in the center, all among the stylized clouds continuing along the sides. The interior and the base are black lacquered. Estimate: €20,000-30,000 (USD22,560-33,840). A similar lacquer box carved with three dragons sold in Christie's Paris, 15 June 2004, lot 123. .
This current estimate seems strategic. The cinnabar market has been stronger in recent years. This wonderful item will for sure attract a great deal of interest on June 12. I bet it will be way over this estimate...I will update the final price upon its sale. Please follow up here...
.
直径:17.2cm(6 3/4in).

[S-class*]17/18th century, Chinese reticulated carved huanghuali panel #1. Dragon mother teaching little dragons the skills of flying. It was extremely exquisitely carved, and both sides mirror each other. It was likely an important decorative part of a long altar table. Huanghuali has long been one of the most appreciated rosewood by the Chinese Imperial families and the literates in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The literates actually were direct designers of many of most beautiful pieces. It’s a type of hardwood particularly suitable for detailed carvings. This type of trees grow extremely slow in Southeast Asia, mainly on Hainan Island and in Northern Vietnam. The high demand for it soon exhausted this slow-growing tree by end of Ming. It was later replaced by another type of hardwood Zitan. Huanghuali furniture made in Míng or Míng style was regarded of the highest standard of furniture art by Chinese scholars and art collectors
.

    Ming Dynasty #tihong (#carved #redlacquerware ) Long #plate
L/W: 39.3cm x 14.5cm

Yuan and #earlyming carved #lacquerware #plates often prominently feature plant and flower motifs or #landscape scenes showing some type of building, small bridges across flowing rivers, ponds, gardens, pavilions, and other aspects of palace or aristocratic life. Plates such as this one, on the other hand, usually depict more nature-centric motifs: towering #mountains , rushing #waterfalls , straight #pines , and lounging #clouds ; these served as another medium for the same subject matter as #literati paintings, and are extremely rare.

Another notable characteristic of these landscape plates is the #layering of the carving: the rippling water forms the deepest level; the clouds and mountain peaks are in the middle; the branches and trunks of the pine trees are the shallowest. This creates and exaggerates a three-dimensional perspective. The complexity of this layering surpasses the modest techniques of the Yuan Dynasty, which in comparison often have a flattened feel, and is different from those of the late Ming Dynasty (after the reign of #jiajing ), where carved lacquer became a medium for showcasing individual artisans’ talents and abilities. In summary, this piece is a true #treasure amongst carved lacquerware.

    Ming Dynasty #tihong ( #carved #redlacquerware ) Long #plate

Now this is an interesting pair of 18th century/mid-Qing cabinets from Shanxi. Something you almost never see anymore. Though I am tempted to call them buddha cabinets (佛柜) they are actually known as 五彩顶箱小书柜 which we could roughly translate to "painted compound-book cabinets." A few things make this pair unique. The first is the that it's an actual pair.
While pairs are not unusual per say, singles are still definitely more common than sets, as many sets were split apart for the sake of profit. But what is very rare, is that both the boxes and cabinets remain as a complete untouched original 4 piece set. And that is just not common.
Like cabinets, most trunks were also separated from their original bases to be sold separately for a higher price. In fact collectors today often don't realize their boxes were probably originally a set and likely part of a larger matched unit. The other is the relatively good condition of these cabinets considering their 250-300ish years of age.
And finally, there is a very interesting story being told in the 5 color surface paintings. Can you guess what the story is?
